Vitiligo is a long-term condition where pale white patches develop on the skin. It’s caused by the lack of melanin, which is the pigment in the skin. Vitiligo can affect any area of skin, but it commonly happens on the face, neck and hands, and in skin creases.
The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, although most experts believe that it is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys certain cells within the body.
What Causes Vitiligo?
The cause is not known. Vitiligo may be an autoimmune disease. These diseases happen when your immune system mistakenly attacks some part of your own body. In vitiligo, the immune system may destroy the melanocytes in the skin. It is also possible that one or more genes may make a person more likely to get the disorder.
Some researchers think that melanocytes destroy themselves. Others think that a single event such as sunburn or emotional distress can cause vitiligo. But these events have not been proven to cause vitiligo.
Vitiligo can also affect other parts of your body. A section of hair can turn white. Some people lose colour inside their mouths. Even an eye can lose some of its colour.
What causes this colour loss is still a mystery. We do know that vitiligo is not contagious. It is not life-threatening.
But vitiligo can be life-altering. Some people develop low self-esteem. They may no longer want to hang out with friends. They can develop serious depression. Most people have vitiligo for life, so it’s important to develop coping strategies.
Different Patterns of Vitiligo
Vitiligo can sometimes have different appearances, so being familiar with the different patterns that can exist is helpful to recognize it and tell it apart from other conditions. For example, vitiligo can affect a small area (usually early on before it spreads), called focal vitiligo. It can become widespread, often called generalized vitiligo. It can affect just the lips and genitals, called mucosal vitiligo, or those areas plus the fingertips, called lip-tip vitiligo. It can affect the face and hands/feet, which is called acrofacial vitiligo. Universal vitiligo means that most of the skin has lost its pigment as vitiligo has spread all over, usually we reserve this term for when at least 80% is affected. Maybe most importantly, it can affect just one side of your body and stay in a small area, which is called segmental vitiligo.
Signs & Symptoms of Vitiligo
The main sign of vitiligo is pigment loss that produces milky-white patches (depigmentation) on your skin. Other less common signs may include:
- Premature whitening or greying of the hair on your scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or beard
- Loss of colour in the tissues that line the inside of your mouth (mucous membranes)
- Loss or change in colour of the inner layer of your eye (retina)
Although any part of your body may be affected by vitiligo, depigmentation usually first develops on sun-exposed areas of your skin, such as your hands, feet, arms, face and lips. Vitiligo generally appears in one of three patterns:
- Focal. Depigmentation is limited to one or a few areas of your body.
- Segmental. Loss of skin colour occurs on only one side of your body.
- Generalized. Pigment loss is widespread across many parts of your body.
Although it can start at any age, vitiligo often first appears between the ages of 20 and 30. The white patches may begin on your face above your eyes or on your neck, armpits, elbows, genitalia, hands or knees. They’re often symmetrical and can spread over your entire body. The disorder affects both sexes and all races equally.
Most people with vitiligo are otherwise healthy and have normal skin texture and sensation. However, the condition may be more common in people with certain autoimmune diseases – diseases in which your immune system reacts against your body’s own organs or tissues – such as Addison’s disease, vitamin B-12 deficiency anaemia (pernicious anaemia), or thyroid disorders, including hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
The natural course of vitiligo is difficult to predict. Sometimes the patches stop forming without treatment. In other cases, pigment loss can involve most of the surface of your skin.

We divide the treatment for vitiligo in three parts. One when it’s just started and when it can be treated very fast and completely. Second is when its spread to 2-3 parts in isolated locations and it can take anywhere between 2-3 years for complete cure. Sometimes it can take longer but with right Homeopathy treatment and under experts who have managed such illness previously, you can surely expect a complete cure. And thirdly when the disease has covered more than 1/3rd part of the body, has taken multiple treatments and even laser treatment to hide the spots.
