Moreover, increased insulin found in women with PCOS stimulates ovarian androgen production; increased androgen production contributes to insulin resistance. Women with PCOS who are not overweight also frequently have insulin resistance.
PCOS is an inherited, autosomal dominant trait, meaning if a woman has PCOS, it should be looked for in her mother, sisters and daughters. And, since it is autosomal dominant, male relatives can also carry the gene and can transfer the problem to their daughters. Having PCOS puts women at an increased risk of developing diabetes, coronary artery syndrome, lipid disorders (such as elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure) and possibly breast cancer.
Dietary Connection
By far the biggest lifestyle contributor to PCOS is poor diet. Young women with PCOS tend to eat far too much sugar and highly refined carbohydrates. These foods cause an unhealthy rise in insulin levels. Insulin stimulates androgen receptors on the outside of the ovary, causing the typical PCOS symptoms of excess hair (on the face, arms, legs), thin hair (on the head), and acne. Eventually, this type of diet will cause obesity, which will cause insulin resistance (the inability of the cells to take in insulin), which will aggravate the PCOS even more. The androgens also play a role in blocking the release of the egg from the follicle.

Women who suffer from endometriosis may have a higher risk of developing three types of ovarian cancer, a new study says.

The research, published in the online edition of The Lancet Oncology, calculated the association between endometriosis and the risk of the five major types of ovarian cancer: high-grade serous, low-grade serous, clear cell, endometrioid and mucinous carcinomas.
Women with a history of endometriosis have a significantly increased risk of developing three types of ovarian cancer, according to a new study.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 23,000 women in 13 studies and found that those with a history of endometriosis had a more than threefold increased risk of clear-cell ovarian cancers, a more than two-fold increased risk of endometrioid tumors, and a twofold increased risk of low-grade serous ovarian cancers.
A woman with a mother or sister with endometriosis is significantly more likely to contract endometriosis than other women, according to the NIH. Other risks of developing the condition include beginning menstruating at an early age, never having children, and frequent and long-lasting periods. The most telling sign of endometriosis is pain-during and before menstruation, sexual intercourse, and found in the abdomen, lower back and pelvic area.

Doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) found that while the sperm count of a normal Indian adult male used to be 60 million per ml around three decades ago, it now stands at around 20 million per ml.
The study found that majority of men who were exposed to high temperature at their workplace — welders, dyers, blast furnace workers and those employed in cement and steel factories — were more prone to infertility.

AIIMS doctors say a one degree elevation in testicular temperature leads to 14% depression of spermatogenesis.
Experts say the normal temperature of the testes is three degrees lesser than the core body temperature (37 degrees Celsius or 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit).
“Not only has quantity of sperm production declined in males across the world, there has been a decrease in motility (Sperm movement) and morphology (shape and structure) of the sperms. There has been a 2% decrease in quality of male sperm annually. Also, 40% men in reproductive age group are presently recording a quantitative and qualitative decline in sperm quality. Stress also decreases the hormones that stimulate spermatogenesis,” said Dr Rima Dada from AIIMS.
IVF expert Dr Sonia Malik recently conducted a 10-year comparison study on sperm quality and quantity (2000-2001 to 2010-2011) in Southend Fertility and IVF Centre.
According to her study, the percentage of semen ejaculation, which is considered less than normal (below 4 ml), increased from 34% to 65% and most suitable ejaculation volume (more than 4ml) went down from 15% to 3%.
As far as morphology of sperm was concerned, in 2000-2001, 26% of the sperms showed above 60% normality, whereas in 2000-2011 this was reduced to 7%.
Malik said, “Over the past 50 years, expansion of the chemicals has resulted in the release of a plethora of xenobiotics (molecules foreign to biological systems) into the environment leading to male infertility.”
The 10-year-long AIIMS study had surveyed 1,000 men from north India and found that lifestyle factors like tight clothing, hot tub dips and long visits to the sauna, intensive gardening and farming resulting in pesticide exposure and increased obesity rates were major causes for the ever decreasing sperm count.

My daughter aged 18 years had been having irregular periods for 3 years. The flow would continue for a prolonged period and post her periods she would get massive weakness. We were told to do her sonography and the Gynaec concluded that my daughters has ovarian cysts and she was prescribed some hormonal tablets. I was detected as having very low sperm count (oligospermia) at my family physician’s clinic. You may be told IVF costs, as low as Rs.1,50,000, but it’s rarely that low. These prices are for one cycle of IVF and it can take 3 cycles of IVF in some couples. Please confirm all these with your IVF specialist.

While basic IVF costs around Rs. 2,50,000 for one cycle, if you need additional assisted reproductive technologies, the cost will be higher.
For example, ICSI treatment (where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg) may be an additional Rs. 1,50,000 – Rs. 2,50,000.
If you have frozen embryos from a previous cycle and want to use them, doing so is significantly cheaper than doing a complete IVF cycle with fresh embryos. The average cost for a frozen embryo transfer (FET), is about Rs.1,20,000.

You might notice many IVF clinics promote low-cost IVF in India esp. in metro cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, etc. It’s can be a scam, as they will give a different price initially and eventually by the time you complete the IVF process the price may double or even triple. So before you choose a low-cost IVF in Mumbai, check the authenticity of the IVF doctor and the IVF centre. Rarely you will find a cheap IVF centre that offers IVF lower than the above-mentioned cost. So ask for the total cost of IVF to be paid at the end of the IVF process. Few charity clinics or cheap IVF clinics may offer genuine low-cost IVF in Mumbai.
Cost of IVF on Mother’s Health
Medicines used during the IVF cycle, like any drugs you take, come with potential risks and side effects. Reading about potential risks can increase your anxiety during treatment and increase the failure rate in IVF. While you should be educated about the risks, the goal isn’t to scare you out of going through with treatments. Ideally, you should take what you learn here and use the information to make smarter decisions about your treatment.
Are IVF Babies Normal?
Yes, usually babies born out of IVF are normal. The use of fertility drugs during IVF cycles may lead to multiple pregnancies. Some people mistakenly think that multiples are only a risk with IVF treatment. This isn’t true, and actually, with IVF you can choose to have only one embryo transferred into the uterus (which in some women may be a good choice.)
Your risk of multiples is dependent on a number of factors, including which medication you’re taking, what dosage, and how sensitive your body is to the drugs.
If you’re taking medications that mimic the hormones FSH and LH, even with monitoring, your risk of getting pregnant with multiples is higher. As many as 30% of pregnancies from these fertility drugs are multiple pregnancies.
Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome
Another risk that comes with fertility drug use is ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS). OHSS occurs when the ovaries become unusually enlarged, filling with fluid. When ovulation occurs, the fluid is released into the body, causing complications.
Cancer
Past studies have shown increased incidences of breast & ovarian cancers in females undergoing IVF. The studies are vastly inconclusive as contradictory reports are mentioned in various studies. They found that the risk of uterine cancer increased if higher dosages were used and if the drug was taken for six months or more.
Notably, they found that the risk of developing uterine cancer was even stronger if the women were obese or never became pregnant, with a combination of these two factors raising the risk even higher. But if more than one study across the world has concluded the increased incidences of breast & ovarian cancers after fertility drugs, you should weigh your options carefully.
Psychological Effects
Drugs and hormones used to treat infertility may cause a variety of psychological side effects. For example, the synthetic estrogen clomiphene citrate (Clomid, Serophene), frequently prescribed because it improves ovulation and increases sperm production, may cause anxiety, sleep interruptions, mood swings, and irritability in women.

After trying to conceive for more than two years, we started to conduct some online research for the options available for us to know the exact problem with us. We visited various fertility clinics in Mumbai, wherein we came to know that, the problem was with me and I had no sperm in my ejaculation. Then we underwent various tests including biopsies and hormonal tests to know the cause of sperms being totally absent.
