Welling Homeopathy Reviews

Cirrhosis of the liver is a late-stage scarring (fibrosis) of the liver caused by various liver diseases and conditions such as hepatitis and chronic alcoholism. The life expectancy of a person with liver cirrhosis depends on the severity of the disease, the underlying cause, and how well the person responds to treatment.

How Long Can a Person Live with Liver Cirrhosis?

Stages of Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis progresses through four stages, each characterized by specific symptoms. A person’s life expectancy largely depends on the stage at which they’re diagnosed and treated:

  • Compensated Cirrhosis (early stage): This is the beginning phase where symptoms are often not exhibited. The liver is still able to compensate for the damage caused, and life expectancy is often normal if the disease progression can be halted.
  • Decompensated Cirrhosis (advanced stage): As the disease advances, the liver can no longer compensate for the damage caused. Symptoms start to surface more frequently, and the survival rate decreases.

Child-Pugh Score

The Child-Pugh Score, a proven system for assessing the prognosis of chronic liver disease, primarily cirrhosis, helps estimate life expectancy. The score is calculated based on five clinical measures: level of bilirubin, albumin, prothrombin time, the presence of ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy. Depending on the total score, patients are classified into three stages—Child-Pugh A (well-compensated disease), Child-Pugh B (significant functional compromise), and Child-Pugh C (decompensated disease).

  • Patients with Child-Pugh A have a 15-20 year life expectancy.
  • Patients at the Child-Pugh B stage have a median life expectancy of 4-14 years.
  • In contrast, patients with Child-Pugh C have a poor prognosis, with a life expectancy of 1-3 years.

MELD Score

The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score is another tool used to predict survival in patients with end-stage liver disease. The MELD Score ranges from 6 (less severe disease) to 40 (more severe disease). A higher MELD score indicates a more severe disease and a lower life expectancy.

Role of Treatment

The progression of liver cirrhosis can often be stopped or slowed down dramatically with appropriate treatment, which could include lifestyle changes, medications, and in severe cases, liver transplantation. Thus, treatment can significantly prolong a person’s life expectancy with cirrhosis.

It’s crucial to stress that these statistics are average ranges, and individual outcomes can vary greatly. Each patient’s journey with liver cirrhosis is unique, influenced by various factors like overall health, access to medical care, and adherence to treatment. Regular follow-ups and active management of the disease are vital in slowing the progression and improving the quality of life. Always consult with health professionals for a more accurate prognosis.
