What is Multiple Sclerosis?
It is a demyelinating disease that can affect the brain and/or spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance. It’s a lifelong condition that can sometimes cause serious disability. In many cases, it’s possible to treat symptoms. It is commonly seen in women and between the age group of 20-30 yrs.
It is estimated that almost 1 lakh people are diagnosed with MS in India alone.
Causes of Multiple sclerosis
Auto immune in nature in which – the immune system attacks the layer that surrounds and protects the nerves, called the myelin sheath. This damages and scars the sheath, and potentially the underlying nerves, meaning that messages travelling along the nerves become slowed or disrupted.
The cause of multiple sclerosis remains unknown; however, there are several theories about what causes it to develop. Some researchers believe that an autoimmune response occurs when your immune system attacks myelin within the brain and spinal cord. Others think that genetic factors play a role in causing this disorder. Still, others believe that environmental triggers such as viruses may be involved. There is also evidence suggesting that stress can trigger relapses in patients with MS.
Symptoms of Multiple sclerosis
Varies widely from person to person and can affect any part of the body. The main symptoms include:
- Fatigue (13%)
- difficulty walking (3%)
- vision problems, such as blurred vision (16%)
- problems controlling the bladder
- numbness or tingling in different parts of the body (33%)
- muscle stiffness and spasms
- problems with balance and co-ordination (8%)
- problems with thinking, learning and planning
Types of Multiple Sclerosis
The common types of multiple sclerosis are
– primary progressive type: occurs without relapses or remissions at any point in the disease course, also called “benign”
– secondary progressive type: patients who had a remission after an initial attack may become progressively worse over time with gradual deterioration in walking and balance
– relapsing-remitting type: this is the most common variant of MS and patients experience intermittent acute attacks followed by periods during which they are relatively symptom-free
Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis is type of Multiple Sclerosis which accounts for 90% of all diagnosed cases. Symptoms include: Fatigue, Weakness/Numbness, Vision Problems, Bladder Dysfunction, Bowel Incontinence, Cognitive Impairment, Depression, Anxiety, Pain, Spasticity, Tremor, Balance Issues, Sexual Difficulties, Sleep Disturbances, Difficulty Swallowing.
Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis
Remission refers to periods without relapse. In most cases, remission will last from months to years. However, some patients experience frequent relapses throughout their lives. This type of MS is called secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. Secondary progressive multiple sclerosis is characterized by gradual deterioration of physical functions over time. Most patients who suffer from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis eventually become wheelchair-bound. About 10 per cent of all patients with MS never go into remission. They always have active diseases. These individuals have primary progressive multiple sclerosis. Primary progressive multiple sclerosis is marked by a steady decline of physical abilities over time.
Conventional Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
There’s currently no cure for MS, but a number of treatments can help control the condition and improve the quality of life. The treatment you need will depend on the specific symptoms and difficulties you have. It may include: use of steroids / disease-modifying therapies, etc
The treatment of multiple sclerosis can be challenging. A review of all the drugs showed that they have substantial side effects which can be as serious as death. One of the drugs being studied is ocrelizumab and a preliminary study has shown that it may be nontoxic to humans and might work better than the other drugs available.
Complications of Multiple Sclerosis (MS):
Nearly all people with MS will develop some neurologic disability before death, but this disability can range from mild numbness to incapacitating paralysis that leaves the individual bed-bound and unable to perform basic self-care functions. Another common complication of MS is cognitive impairment, which can range from a mild learning disability to significant irreversible dementia. Multiple sclerosis patients can also develop depression, mood swings, fatigue syndrome (also called chronic fatigue syndrome), bladder problems, sleep disturbances including insomnia and some sexual dysfunctions, bowel spasticity and so many other conditions.
Homeopathy Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis
The Homeopathy Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis involves the use of remedies that correspond to the mental, emotional, physical symptoms and overall personality traits (also known as the totality of the patient) of an individual with MS.
Since there is no one homogeneous, characteristic picture of Multiple Sclerosis, but rather a multitude of possible manifestations; it becomes necessary to evaluate and assess each case individually for its totality.
All the possible symptoms are considered, and all the other factors could be influencing the current illness of the patient.
Homeopathy Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis follows a holistic approach to health which views individuals as more than merely the sum of their parts, or even as collections of linked physiological processes moving in tandem with external events; rather, they are seen as complex beings who feel and react to the world with a distinct character of their own.
Homeopathy Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis considers the different stages of the life cycle, because weaknesses in youth may suddenly appear in advanced age as full-blown diseases. It also takes into account the genetic history of an illness, related to those already affected in the family.
