Asthma at a glance

  • What it is: a chronic condition of the lungs in which the airways become inflamed, swollen and narrowed.
  • Types: allergic (extrinsic) and non-allergic (intrinsic), with exercise-induced and night-time (nocturnal) forms.
  • Main symptoms: wheeze, cough worse at night or early morning, chest tightness and breathlessness.
  • Key rule: never stop prescribed inhalers or steroids on your own; keep your reliever inhaler with you.
  • Our approach: individualised homeopathic care alongside your asthma action plan.

What is asthma?

In healthy lungs, air moves in and out through the airways freely. In asthma the airway lining becomes swollen and the muscles around it tighten, and extra mucus is produced, so less air gets through. This causes the wheeze, cough and breathlessness that come in attacks, often triggered by something specific.

About nine in ten cases of childhood asthma are allergic and run in families. Extrinsic (allergic) asthma is triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites and animal dander, and often comes with hay fever or eczema. Intrinsic (non-allergic) asthma is set off by things such as cold air, smoke, strong emotions, chest infections, aspirin-type medicines and exercise. Exercise-induced asthma appears soon after exertion, and nocturnal asthma tends to occur in the early hours, between about 2 and 4 am, in both types.

Symptoms of asthma

Common symptoms include:

  • Coughing, worse at night or early in the morning, and often after a viral infection
  • Wheezing, a whistling sound when breathing out
  • Chest tightness or a feeling of heaviness
  • Shortness of breath, on exertion or at rest in an attack
  • Waking at night with cough or breathlessness
  • Frequent colds that settle in the chest
  • A feeling of being unable to get a full breath, or of the throat being strangled
  • Tiring quickly during play or exercise, especially in children

Causes and risk factors of asthma

Common causes and risk factors include:

  • An inherited tendency to allergies (atopy) and a family history of asthma
  • Respiratory infections in early childhood, and exposure to allergens when the immune system is developing
  • Other allergic conditions such as hay fever and allergic rhinitis
  • Smoking and second-hand smoke, and low birth weight
  • Air pollution, fumes, chemicals and pollen
  • Acid reflux (GERD) and obesity
  • Triggers: dust mites, mould, pet dander, cockroaches, cold or dry air, weather changes, viral infections, strong emotions and stress
  • Some foods in allergic people, and medicines such as aspirin-type painkillers

How asthma is diagnosed

Asthma is diagnosed from your history and tests that measure how well air moves in the lungs:

  • Spirometry to measure airflow before and after a reliever inhaler
  • Peak flow readings at home over a few weeks
  • Allergy tests (skin tests or blood tests) to look for triggers
  • Chest X-ray to rule out other lung conditions
  • Tests for acid reflux or sinus problems, if these may be contributing

Warning signs: when to get urgent help

Please go to the nearest hospital emergency department immediately if there is:

  • Breathlessness so severe that you cannot speak a full sentence
  • Blue or grey lips or fingernails
  • No improvement, or only short relief, after using the reliever inhaler
  • Drowsiness, confusion or exhaustion during an attack
  • In a child, fast breathing with the skin sucking in between the ribs or at the neck

Conventional treatment options

Asthma treatment is based on a written action plan from your doctor:

  • Reliever inhalers that quickly open the airways during symptoms
  • Preventer (controller) inhalers, usually low-dose steroids, taken every day to calm the airway inflammation
  • Combination inhalers, leukotriene tablets and other medicines for persistent asthma
  • Allergen and trigger control, and treatment of nasal allergy and reflux
  • Allergen immunotherapy or biologic medicines in selected people with severe asthma
  • Yearly flu vaccination and regular review of inhaler technique

Homeopathic medicines commonly considered for asthma

These medicines are commonly considered in homeopathy for asthma, with the symptom picture traditionally associated with each. They are listed for general information, not as a prescription.

Arsenicum album: wheezing that is worse after midnight, with restlessness, anxiety and a wish for warm sips.

Ipecacuanha: a constant rattle in the chest with cough that brings on nausea, and a feeling of suffocation.

Kali carbonicum: waking at 3 to 4 am with wheezing and sitting up leaning forward, in a chilly, easily tired person.

Natrum sulphuricum: asthma that is worse in damp weather and in the early morning.

Spongia tosta: a dry, barking cough with a tight chest, worse in cold dry air.

The right medicine is chosen only after detailed case-taking by an experienced doctor.

Self-care and lifestyle tips

These measures support general health and may ease symptoms, but they do not replace treatment when it is needed.

  • Learn your triggers and avoid them where you can, including smoke, dust and strong smells.
  • Wash bedding in hot water every week and use dust-mite covers on mattresses and pillows.
  • Keep your reliever inhaler with you, and follow the written asthma action plan your doctor gives you.
  • Practise breathing exercises and yoga as taught by a qualified instructor.
  • Keep up flu vaccination, maintain a healthy weight and stay gently active, warming up before exercise.
  • Treat nasal allergies and acid reflux, which can make asthma worse.

Frequently asked questions about asthma

1. What is the homeopathic treatment for asthma?

Homeopathic treatment is individualised: the medicine is chosen after detailed case-taking, based on your symptoms, triggers and general health. Arsenicum album, Ipecacuanha, Kali carbonicum and Natrum sulphuricum are among those traditionally considered. It is offered as supportive care alongside your inhalers.

2. What is the difference between allergic and non-allergic asthma?

Allergic asthma is triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites and pet dander and often starts in childhood. Non-allergic asthma is triggered by things such as cold air, infections, stress, smoke and exercise.

3. What triggers an asthma attack?

Common triggers are dust mites, pollen, smoke, pollution, cold air, exercise, viral infections, strong smells and stress. Keeping a symptom diary helps to find your own triggers.

4. Can I stop my inhaler if I take homeopathic medicines?

No. Please do not stop or reduce any inhaler or steroid on your own. Any change should be made only by your doctor.

5. Can I consult Welling Homeopathy online for asthma?

Yes. You can share your symptoms and reports and consult our specialists online from anywhere. We have been consulting patients online for 25 years.

6. Which is the best homeopathic medicine for asthma?

There is no single best homeopathic medicine for asthma. Arsenicum album, Ipecacuanha, Kali carbonicum, Natrum sulphuricum and Spongia tosta are among the medicines traditionally considered, but the right medicine depends on your symptoms, what brings them on or eases them, your general health and your personality. At Welling Homeopathy our specialists choose it after a detailed case-taking, so please consult them rather than choosing a medicine yourself.

7. How long does homeopathic treatment for asthma take?

The duration depends on how long you have had asthma, how severe it is, what treatment you have already taken and your general health. Some people notice a change in their symptoms within weeks, while others need several months of regular follow-up. Your specialist will explain what to expect at your first consultation and review your progress at each follow-up.

8. Is it safe to take homeopathic medicines along with my current medicines for asthma?

Homeopathic medicines are highly diluted and are not known to interfere with other medicines, but you should always tell your doctor and our specialists about everything you take. Please do not stop, skip or change any prescribed medicine on your own; any change should be discussed with the doctor who prescribed it.

9. What are the early signs of asthma?

A cough that is worse at night or early in the morning, wheezing, a tight chest, getting breathless on stairs or play, and frequent colds that settle in the chest are the usual early signs of asthma.

10. What should I eat or avoid if I have asthma?

Eat antioxidant-rich food such as amla, onions, prunes, raisins, strawberries and cherries, and fresh fruit and vegetables, and keep a healthy weight. If a particular food triggers your asthma, avoid it, and do not cut out foods without advice.

11. What is the difference between conventional and homeopathic treatment of asthma?

Conventional treatment of asthma uses reliever inhalers, daily preventer inhalers, trigger control and, for severe asthma, biologic medicines. Homeopathic treatment, in contrast, is individualised: the medicine is chosen for you as a whole person, after detailed case-taking, and is offered alongside the conventional care that your doctor advises.

12. Who is the best homeopathy doctor for asthma in Mumbai?

Dr. Sourabh Welling, M.D., founder of Welling Homeopathy, Mumbai, who has over 25 years of experience, treats asthma with individualised homeopathic care, together with a team of senior specialists. You can consult him and the team at our Mumbai clinics or online.
