1. What does the thyroid do?
This butterfly-shaped gland in the neck makes the hormones T3 and T4, which regulate metabolism, heart rate, body temperature and energy.
2. What is the difference between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism?
Hypothyroidism (underactive) brings tiredness, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation and dry skin. Hyperthyroidism (overactive) brings weight loss, palpitations, heat intolerance, tremor and anxiety.
3. Which tests check the thyroid?
TSH and free T4 first, sometimes T3, anti-TPO antibodies and a neck ultrasound if there is a lump or swelling.
4. Why are thyroid problems more common in women?
Autoimmune thyroid disease is several times commoner in women, and it often appears after pregnancy, during perimenopause or alongside other autoimmune conditions.
