Fibroids are growths of tissue usually found in the wall of the uterus, or womb. They are made of a mixture of muscle tissue from the uterus and threadlike fibers of connective tissue. Although they are called tumors, fibroids are not cancerous. This page explains the symptoms, causes and effect on fertility, the tests, the conventional options and how Welling Homeopathy approaches uterine fibroids.

Uterine fibroids at a glance
- How common: 2 or 3 in every 10 women over 35, most often between 30 and 50.
- Main symptom: heavy, painful or prolonged periods; many women have no symptoms.
- Fertility: about 1 in 15 women with infertility has fibroids, but fibroids cause only 2% to 3% of infertility.
- Key tests: pelvic ultrasound, sometimes MRI or hysteroscopy, and a blood count for anemia.
- Our approach: tailor-made homeopathic treatment, within the 4-step infertility protocol.
What are uterine fibroids?
Fibroids are very common. It is also common to have more than one: some women have as many as a hundred. They can be as small as a pinpoint or as large as a basketball, usually round or oval, and firm in texture, like an unripe peach.
They grow slowly in response to the hormone estrogen, so they can show up as early as age 20 and shrink after menopause when estrogen falls.
Symptoms of uterine fibroids
Most women with fibroids have no symptoms. Abnormal uterine bleeding is the commonest symptom. Others include:
- Heavy menstrual bleeding, which can lead to iron-deficiency anemia
- Prolonged periods of seven days or more, and spotting between periods
- Pelvic pressure or pain
- Frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder
- Constipation, backache or leg pains
- Pain during intercourse
- Rarely, severe pain when a fibroid outgrows its blood supply or a stalked fibroid twists, sometimes with fever
Causes and risk factors of fibroids
The exact cause is not known. Genetic changes, growth factors, abnormalities of blood vessels and the tissue response to injury have all been suggested. Associated factors include:
- A family history: fibroids tend to run in families
- Estrogen stimulation during the reproductive years
- Being overweight or obese
- Never having given birth
- Periods that began before age 10
Fibroids and fertility
About 1 in every 15 women with infertility has fibroids, but the fibroids are usually innocent bystanders: they cause only 2% to 3% of cases of infertility. Fibroids that block one or both of the fallopian tubes may prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg, and fibroids that fill the uterine cavity may block implantation of a newly fertilized egg.
Fibroids inside the cavity (submucosal) matter most for fertility, those within the wall can matter when they are large, and those outside the uterus usually do not.
How fibroids are diagnosed
- Pelvic examination
- Pelvic or transvaginal ultrasound to show the number, size and position of the fibroids
- MRI or hysteroscopy in selected cases, especially before surgery or when planning pregnancy
- Blood count to check for anemia from heavy bleeding
Warning signs: when to get urgent help
See your doctor if you have pelvic pain that does not go away, very heavy or painful periods, spotting between periods, pain with intercourse, or difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels. Seek prompt medical care for severe vaginal bleeding or sharp pelvic pain that comes on suddenly.
Conventional treatment of fibroids
- Watchful waiting for small fibroids without symptoms
- Medicines for bleeding and pain, iron for anemia, and hormonal medicines that temporarily shrink fibroids
- Myomectomy (removal of the fibroids, keeping the uterus), often chosen when you want to conceive
- Uterine artery embolization or focused ultrasound
- Hysterectomy in selected women who do not wish to have children
