IVF success rate at a glance

  • Realistic range: between 20 and 35 percent per cycle for most women, depending on the number of cycles, age and egg reserve.
  • By age: higher under 35, and about 4 percent over 42.
  • By cycle: one study found cumulative success of 34 to 42 percent after three cycles, with women needing on average 2.7 cycles.
  • Key factors: age, previous pregnancy, type of fertility problem, donor eggs, lifestyle and the clinic.
  • Our alternative: the HART protocol, offered before going directly to IVF-like artificial treatments.

Why are IVF success rates not higher?

The success rate of IVF depends on various factors. It is not one number: it varies with age, past illness, the doctor’s experience and past failed IVF cycles.

The highest possible success rate after the first cycle is about 18 to 30 percent, which means that up to 82 percent of women do not conceive after the first cycle. The rate can be far lower with increasing age and after multiple IVF cycles, and egg reserve falls with every failed cycle. Most failures happen at the implantation stage or later.

What is the success rate of IVF?

Published figures range widely: some clinics advertise rates as high as 75 percent, while global surveys have found rates as low as 18 percent. Realistically speaking, the actual success rate can be between 20 and 35 percent, depending on the number of IVF cycles and other criteria such as age and egg reserve.

Always ask how a rate is calculated: a pregnancy test, a clinical pregnancy and a live birth are very different results, and a rate per embryo transfer is higher than a rate per cycle started.

IVF success rate by age and other factors

Several factors help or hinder your chance of getting pregnant:

  • Age: your age and using your own eggs matter most. The live birth rate for women under 35 after multiple cycles is 18 to 40 percent, while women over 42 have about a 4 percent success rate
  • Previous pregnancy: a previous pregnancy with the same partner raises the probability of success, while recurrent miscarriage or a different partner may reduce it
  • Type of fertility problem: uterine abnormalities, DES exposure, fibroids and some male factors lower the likelihood
  • Ovarian function: a high FSH, which indicates low ovarian reserve, or needing large amounts of stimulation drugs may reduce the chance
  • Duration of infertility: the chance falls with the number of years a couple has been infertile
  • Donor eggs: using eggs from a younger woman may increase the chance for women over 40; 2011 findings showed a 55 percent live birth rate with a fresh donor egg or embryo transfer
  • Lifestyle: smokers need higher doses of drugs, have lower implantation rates, need almost twice as many attempts and have more failed fertilisation. Being overweight or underweight also lowers success. Aim for a healthy weight
  • The clinic: the training and experience of the staff, the live birth rate per cycle started, the multiple pregnancy rate, the laboratory and the types of patients accepted

Some clinics accept patients with a lower chance of success, or specialise in particular treatments, so compare like with like.

IVF success rate by cycle

Most IVF specialists would say you need to plan for three to five cycles from the start, which can mean more than 10 to 15 lakh rupees of expense with no guarantee of pregnancy. Your odds improve if you can do more than one cycle.

According to at least one study, women who conceived with IVF went through an average of 2.7 cycles, and the odds of success for women of all ages after three cycles were between 34 and 42 percent. Cumulative success continued to improve slightly up to five cycles, and after that the odds went down.

How to improve the success rate of IVF

  • Stop smoking at least three months before the cycle
  • Reach and keep a healthy weight
  • Get a semen analysis and treat male factors
  • Ask for your own age-specific success rates, and an itemised cost
  • Discuss the options for a poor response, such as an adapted stimulation protocol or donor eggs
  • Take folic acid and the supplements your doctor advises
  • Look after your emotional health between cycles

Frequently asked questions about IVF success rate

1. What is the success rate of IVF?

Most women have per-cycle success rates of about 20 to 35 percent, with the best chances at 40 percent or more, depending on age, egg reserve and the number of cycles.

2. What is the IVF success rate by age?

It is highest under 35 and falls steadily with age; the live birth rate for women over 42 using their own eggs is about 4 percent.

3. What is the IVF success rate after 3 cycles?

One study found cumulative success of 34 to 42 percent after three cycles, with an average of 2.7 cycles needed.

4. Why is the IVF success rate so low?

Embryo quality, egg age, chromosomal abnormalities and implantation failure account for most failures, and the rate falls with age and after repeated cycles.

5. How can I improve my chances of IVF success?

Stop smoking, keep a healthy weight, treat male factors, choose a clinic with good age-specific results, and discuss donor eggs if your reserve is very low.

6. Does using donor eggs improve success?

For women over 40, using eggs from a younger donor can raise the chance of pregnancy because egg quality is the main limiting factor.

7. Is there a natural alternative to IVF?

At Welling Homeopathy the HART protocol is offered as a non-invasive, non-hormonal alternative to IUI and IVF, and to couples who have had failed cycles.

8. How many IVF cycles should we plan for?

Most specialists suggest planning for three to five cycles from the start, but ask your own doctor about your chances.

9. Can I consult Welling Homeopathy online about IVF failures?

Yes. You can share your reports and consult our specialists online from anywhere. We have been consulting patients online for 25 years.
