Thyroid cancer usually begins as a painless lump or nodule in the neck, often found on a routine examination or scan. Most thyroid cancers, such as papillary and follicular cancer, grow slowly and are treated mainly with surgery, sometimes followed by radioactive iodine and lifelong thyroid hormone tablets. This guide explains how thyroid cancer is usually treated in Mumbai, the side effects people commonly face, and how complementary homeopathic care at Welling Homeopathy can support you alongside your oncology team.
This page explains what treatment usually involves, the side effects people commonly face, and how complementary homeopathic cancer care at Welling Homeopathy can sit alongside – never in place of – the plan made by your oncology team.
How thyroid cancer is usually treated
Treatment is planned by an endocrine surgeon, an endocrinologist or oncologist and, where needed, a nuclear medicine specialist, and depends on the type and stage of the cancer. The main components are:
- Surgery – removal of half of the thyroid (lobectomy) or of the whole gland (total thyroidectomy), sometimes with removal of lymph nodes in the neck.
- Active surveillance – for some very small, low-risk papillary cancers, careful monitoring may be offered instead of immediate surgery.
- Radioactive iodine – a drink or capsule given after thyroidectomy in selected people to destroy any remaining thyroid tissue or cancer cells.
- Thyroid hormone tablets – levothyroxine is taken for life after thyroidectomy, and the dose may be set slightly high to lower the pituitary hormone TSH that can stimulate thyroid cells.
- External radiation and targeted drugs – reserved for selected advanced or iodine-resistant cancers, and for medullary and anaplastic types, which are treated differently.
Common side effects of treatment
Side effects differ from person to person and depend on the drugs, doses and your general health. Your oncology team can often prevent or reduce many of them with medicines and supportive measures, so always report symptoms early.
Chemotherapy and targeted therapy
- Standard chemotherapy is rarely used in thyroid cancer. Targeted drugs such as kinase inhibitors, used for advanced disease, can cause:
- Raised blood pressure
- Diarrhoea, nausea and loss of appetite
- Sore, peeling palms and soles (hand-foot skin reaction)
- Mouth sores, voice change, tiredness and weight loss
Radiation therapy
- Radioactive iodine: dry mouth, taste change, tenderness or swelling of the neck and salivary glands, and nausea for a few days
- Radioactive iodine: tiredness, and a need to keep a safe distance from children and pregnant women for a short period as your team advises
- External radiation, when used: sore throat, difficulty swallowing and skin redness in the neck
- Possible effects on fertility and a need to avoid pregnancy for a time after radioactive iodine
After thyroid surgery
- Low calcium if the parathyroid glands are affected, causing tingling around the mouth and in the fingers, and muscle cramps
- Hoarseness or a weak voice, which usually improves but sometimes lasts
- A neck scar and stiffness, which gentle exercises can help
- Tiredness, weight and mood changes while the thyroid hormone dose is being adjusted
How complementary homeopathic care fits in
Complementary care means supportive treatment given together with your oncology treatment. At Welling Homeopathy the aim is to help you feel as well as possible during and after treatment: easing symptoms and side effects where we can, supporting appetite, energy and sleep, and helping you keep up your quality of life so that you can carry on with the treatment your doctors have planned.
What does the research say? Research on homeopathy for the side effects of cancer treatment is limited. A few small studies of particular remedies (for example for radiation skin reactions or mouth sores) have been reported, but good-quality evidence is lacking, and homeopathy has not been shown to treat or cure cancer. For this reason we use homeopathic care only as a complement, and never as a replacement for surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, targeted, hormonal or immune therapy, or for the advice of your oncologist.
ImmunoKnife™ Homeopathy Treatment Process
ImmunoKnife™ is the speciality homeopathic treatment process for cancers developed by Dr. Sourabh Welling at Welling Research Labs in Mumbai and practised at the Welling cancer clinics. Our approach looks at the whole person – the cancer, the treatment you are having, your symptoms and your constitution – and is aimed at easing tiredness, mood and sleep problems, digestive symptoms and the strain of long-term follow-up. It is offered as supportive care around your oncology treatment, and your oncologist should always be told about it.
Over 25 years of experience treating patients
Dr. Sourabh Welling, founder of Welling Homeopathy, has been treating patients for more than 25 years, including people living with cancer and going through chemotherapy and radiation. In a first consultation he and his team take a detailed history – your diagnosis and treatment plan, your symptoms, your past health and your personality – so that supportive care is planned around you and not around a standard list.
Practical ways to feel better during treatment
- Take levothyroxine correctly – on an empty stomach, with water, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast, and keep calcium and iron tablets a few hours apart.
- Watch for low calcium – report tingling or cramps quickly, because it is easily treated.
- Follow the low-iodine diet if advised before radioactive iodine, and drink plenty of fluids afterwards.
- Care for your voice – rest it, stay hydrated and ask for a speech therapist if hoarseness lasts.
- Neck exercises – your surgeon or physiotherapist can show gentle stretches for stiffness.
- Keep your blood tests – TSH, thyroglobulin and scans are how your team follows you.
- Look after your mind – anxiety about follow-up is common; talk to family or a counsellor.
When to call your oncologist or go to hospital urgently
Do not wait for a homeopathic appointment if you have any of the following – contact your oncology team or go to the nearest hospital:
- Difficulty breathing, noisy breathing or difficulty swallowing
- Swelling, bleeding or rapidly increasing pain in the neck after surgery
- Tingling around the mouth or fingers, muscle spasms or cramps
- A rapidly growing neck lump or a new change in your voice
- Fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or above
- Chest pain, a racing heart or severe weakness

Frequently asked questions
Can homeopathy cure thyroid cancer?
No. Homeopathy has not been shown to cure or treat thyroid cancer, and we do not claim that it does. We use it only as supportive, complementary care alongside the surgery, radioactive iodine and hormone treatment planned by your oncology team.
What are the symptoms of thyroid cancer?
A lump or swelling in the front of the neck, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and enlarged glands in the neck. Most thyroid nodules are not cancer, but any new neck lump should be examined and usually needs an ultrasound and sometimes a needle test.
Do I need thyroid tablets for life after surgery?
After a total thyroidectomy, yes: levothyroxine replaces the hormone your body can no longer make. After removal of half the gland, some people need tablets and some do not, and your blood tests will show this.
Is it safe to take homeopathic medicines along with radioactive iodine and thyroid hormone?
Homeopathic medicines are highly diluted and are not known to interfere with these treatments, but you should tell your doctor about everything you are taking, and never stop or change your thyroid tablets or any prescribed treatment.
Can complementary care help with tiredness and mood after treatment?
Our aim is to support energy, sleep and mood while your hormone dose settles. Results vary and good-quality research is limited, which is why we describe it as supportive care only.
How do I book a consultation in Mumbai?
