Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), commonly called acid reflux or acidity, is usually explained as stomach acid burning the food pipe. Newer research suggests the picture is more complicated: reflux can also trigger the cells of the oesophagus to release inflammatory chemicals, so part of the damage comes from inflammation, not only from acid itself.
Symptoms
- Burning behind the breastbone (heartburn), especially after meals or when lying down
- Sour or bitter taste in the mouth, regurgitation
- Difficulty or pain on swallowing, hoarseness, chronic cough
Why this matters
Acid-lowering tablets relieve symptoms but do not necessarily address the underlying cause. Long-standing reflux can lead to oesophagitis, narrowing and, in some people, changes in the lining that need monitoring.
What helps
- Smaller, earlier evening meals, and not lying down for two to three hours after eating
- Raising the head of the bed, and losing excess weight
- Avoiding smoking, alcohol, very spicy or fatty food, and large amounts of tea, coffee or fizzy drinks if they trigger symptoms
- Managing stress
Difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools or unexplained weight loss need prompt medical evaluation. Homeopathic treatment is individualised and can be used as part of a long-term plan.
