Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a fast-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. In AML the marrow produces large numbers of immature white blood cells called myeloblasts. These crowd out normal red cells, platelets and healthy white cells, which is why the illness can cause tiredness, infections and bleeding.
What causes AML?
In most people no single cause is found. Known risk factors include earlier chemotherapy or radiation, a pre-existing bone marrow disorder such as myelodysplastic syndrome, certain inherited genetic conditions, long-term exposure to chemicals such as benzene, and smoking.
Symptoms of acute myeloid leukemia
- Persistent tiredness, pale skin and breathlessness (anaemia)
- Frequent or severe infections and fever
- Easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums or tiny red spots on the skin
- Bone or joint pain, and sometimes weight loss
Diagnosis and treatment
AML is diagnosed with a complete blood count, a bone marrow biopsy and genetic tests on the leukemia cells. Treatment is started promptly by a haematologist or oncologist and usually involves intensive chemotherapy, targeted drugs for particular gene changes, and in suitable patients a stem cell transplant. The plan depends on age, general health and the genetic features of the leukemia.
Supportive homeopathic care
Homeopathic treatment may be used as supportive care to help with general wellbeing during and after conventional treatment. It should not delay or replace the treatment your haematologist recommends.
