Tinnitus is the perception of ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming in the ears when no outside sound is present. It is a symptom, not a disease, and varies from a faint background noise to a loud, distressing sound.
Common causes
- Exposure to loud noise, at work, in concerts or through headphones
- Earwax blockage, ear infections or fluid in the middle ear
- Age-related hearing loss
- Certain medicines, such as high doses of aspirin and some antibiotics
- Meniere’s disease, high blood pressure, jaw or neck problems, and stress or lack of sleep
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if tinnitus is in one ear only, pulses with the heartbeat, appears suddenly with hearing loss or dizziness, or follows a head injury. An ear examination and a hearing test are the first steps.
Managing tinnitus
- Protect your ears from loud noise and keep headphone volume low
- Use background sound (a fan or soft music) at night
- Limit caffeine and alcohol if they make it worse, and manage stress and sleep
- Counselling or sound therapy can help when tinnitus is persistent
Homeopathic treatment is individualised and may be tried as supportive care once serious causes have been excluded.
