The idea of “starving” cancer through diet is popular, but it needs careful explanation. Cancer cells do use glucose, yet so do all healthy cells, and no diet has been proven to eliminate an established cancer. What diet can do is lower the risk of developing cancer and support the body during treatment.
What the evidence does support
- Obesity is linked with a higher risk of several cancers, including breast (after menopause), colon, kidney, liver and pancreatic cancer. Keeping a healthy weight lowers risk.
- Diets high in sugary drinks, refined carbohydrates and processed foods contribute to weight gain and insulin resistance.
- Diets rich in vegetables, fruit, fibre and whole foods are associated with a lower risk of several cancers.
- Red and processed meat and alcohol increase the risk of some cancers.
A cancer-preventive way of eating
Emphasise plant foods, whole grains and pulses; choose healthy fats; keep sugar and refined flour low; limit processed meat and alcohol; and stay physically active. These habits also benefit the heart and help control diabetes.
If you have cancer
Do not follow extreme or very restrictive diets without medical advice, because losing weight and muscle during treatment can be harmful. Ask your oncologist or an oncology dietitian for a plan, and use homeopathic and nutritional support as an addition to – never a replacement for – your treatment.
