Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. It is found at younger ages in India than in many Western countries, and it is more often diagnosed in urban than in rural areas. Knowing the warning signs helps people seek help early, when treatment is most effective.
Common signs and symptoms
- A new lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
- A change in the size or shape of a breast
- Dimpling, puckering, redness or scaling of the skin
- A nipple that turns inward, or discharge from the nipple, especially if bloody
- Swelling in the armpit or around the collarbone
- Persistent pain in one area of the breast
Most breast lumps turn out to be benign, but any new change should be examined by a doctor without delay.
Factors that influence risk
Risk rises with age and with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer (including BRCA gene changes). Other factors include an early first period, late menopause, never having children or a first pregnancy at a later age, shorter periods of breastfeeding, long-term hormone therapy, alcohol, obesity and lack of exercise. Some of these, such as weight, alcohol and activity, can be changed.
Screening and diagnosis
Being familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel, regular clinical breast examination and mammography as advised for your age and risk are the main tools for early detection. A suspicious area is confirmed with imaging and a needle biopsy.
Homeopathic support
Homeopathic treatment is offered as complementary care alongside surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy or radiation, never in place of them.
