Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also called myalgic encephalomyelitis, is a long-term illness in which overwhelming tiredness lasts for six months or more, is not relieved by rest and worsens after physical or mental effort.
Main symptoms
- Profound fatigue that limits normal activities
- Feeling unwell for a day or more after exertion
- Unrefreshing sleep or disturbed sleep
- Difficulty with memory and concentration (“brain fog”)
- Muscle and joint pain, headaches, sore throat or tender glands
- Dizziness on standing
Diagnosis
There is no single test. Doctors first rule out other causes of tiredness: anaemia, thyroid disease, diabetes, vitamin B12 or D deficiency, infections, sleep disorders, depression and the effects of medicines.
Managing CFS
- Pace activity: balance rest and activity, and avoid the “push and crash” cycle
- Keep regular sleep habits and eat balanced meals
- Treat symptoms such as pain and sleep problems
- Seek support for the emotional effects of a long illness
Homeopathic treatment is individualised to the person’s whole symptom picture and can be used as supportive care alongside medical evaluation.
