Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it, most often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the lining of the pelvis. Because it can be hidden from routine tests, it is a frequent cause of what is first labelled as unexplained infertility.
What is endometriosis?
This displaced tissue responds to the monthly hormone cycle, bleeds, and causes inflammation, scarring and sometimes adhesions that can bind pelvic organs together. The exact cause is not fully understood; theories include backward flow of menstrual blood, immune factors and genetics.
Risk factors
- A mother or sister with endometriosis
- Short monthly cycles or long, heavy periods
- Starting periods at an early age
- Not having had children
Common symptoms
- Severe period pain that may start before and continue after bleeding
- Pain during or after intercourse
- Chronic pelvic or lower-back pain
- Heavy periods or spotting between periods
- Painful bowel movements or urination around the period
- Difficulty becoming pregnant
Some women have very few symptoms, and the amount of pain does not always match the extent of the disease.
Treatment
Diagnosis usually involves a pelvic scan or MRI, and sometimes laparoscopy. Treatment may include pain relief, hormonal medicines, and surgery to remove deposits and adhesions. Homeopathic treatment is individualised and may be used to help with symptoms alongside medical care.
