Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) causes cramping, bloating and diarrhoea or constipation without visible damage to the gut. Although there is no single cure, most people can reduce their symptoms considerably with a few consistent steps.
Steps that help
- Keep a food and symptom diary for two to three weeks to spot triggers. Common triggers are fatty or fried food, very spicy dishes, caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, artificial sweeteners and large meals.
- Eat regular, smaller meals and chew slowly; do not skip meals.
- Adjust fibre carefully. Soluble fibre (oats, psyllium, bananas) helps both constipation and diarrhoea; add it gradually. Insoluble fibre such as raw bran can worsen bloating in some people.
- Try a low-FODMAP diet under a dietitian’s guidance if symptoms persist. It restricts certain fermentable carbohydrates for a few weeks and then reintroduces them one by one.
- Drink enough water and limit fizzy drinks.
- Exercise regularly. Walking and yoga improve bowel function.
- Manage stress. The gut and brain are closely linked; breathing exercises, sleep, and counselling can reduce flare-ups.
- Consider probiotics for a trial of a few weeks if your doctor agrees.
When to see a doctor
Blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, anaemia, night-time diarrhoea, or new symptoms after the age of 50 need medical investigation. Homeopathic treatment is individualised and can be used alongside these measures.
