Hepatitis C is a viral infection of the liver. Health experts in the Asia-Pacific region have described it as a major public health concern, because many people carry the virus without knowing, and long-standing infection can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
How it spreads
- Contaminated needles and syringes, including re-used medical injections
- Unscreened blood transfusions, particularly before screening was widespread
- Unsterile tattooing, piercing or dental and surgical equipment
- Mother to baby at birth (less commonly), and rarely through sexual contact
It does not spread through coughing, hugging or sharing food.
Why it is called silent
Most people have no symptoms for years, or only mild tiredness. By the time yellowing of the eyes, swelling of the abdomen or other signs appear, the liver may already be badly damaged.
Who should be tested
Anyone who has had a blood transfusion or surgery before screening, who has shared needles, who has abnormal liver tests, or whose mother had hepatitis C. A blood test for antibodies, followed by a viral RNA test, confirms the infection.
Treatment
Modern direct-acting antiviral tablets taken for 8–12 weeks can clear the virus in the great majority of people and are now widely available. Liver monitoring and avoiding alcohol are important. Homeopathic treatment can be used as supportive care for general wellbeing alongside this medical treatment.
