Lichen planus is easy to recognise by its violet-coloured, flat-topped, itchy bumps, which set it apart from eczema and psoriasis. It can appear on the skin, inside the mouth, on the nails and scalp, and on the genitals. How itchy it is differs from person to person.
Causes
Lichen planus is thought to be an immune-mediated condition. It can be triggered or worsened by stress, certain medicines, hepatitis C infection and, in the mouth, by dental materials or injury. It is not contagious.
Signs and symptoms
- Skin: shiny, purplish, flat bumps with fine white lines, usually on the wrists, ankles and lower back
- Mouth: white lacy patches, sometimes with painful sores
- Genitals: itchy, red or white patches
- Nails and scalp: ridging, thinning of nails, and scarring hair loss
Conventional treatment
Topical corticosteroids are the usual first treatment, with antihistamines for itching, and phototherapy, retinoids or immune-suppressing medicines for more persistent cases. The condition may last from months to a few years, and treatment is continued as long as it is needed.
Is there an alternative to steroids?
Homeopathic treatment takes an individualised approach, looking at the person’s overall health, stress, sleep and skin type, and may be used alongside or after discussion with your dermatologist. Please do not stop prescribed steroids suddenly; any change should be made with your doctor. Persistent mouth sores should always be examined, because oral lichen planus needs periodic follow-up.
