If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, you have probably been told about medication, and you may also have heard that homeopathy is a gentler alternative. Parents deserve a straight comparison, not a sales pitch for either side. This page sets out what each approach involves, what the research shows, and how many families use them together.

The short answer

Conventional treatment – behavioural therapy, parent training, school support and, where needed, medication – has by far the strongest evidence for ADHD and should remain the foundation of care. Homeopathy offers individualised, whole-child support that many parents value, but the research on whether it improves ADHD symptoms is limited and inconsistent. For that reason we do not suggest that homeopathy replaces effective conventional treatment, and we never advise stopping a prescribed ADHD medicine without your child’s doctor.

What conventional treatment involves

  • Behavioural therapy and parent training: teaching parents and children routines, reward systems, clear instructions and ways to handle outbursts. This is the first step for pre-school children and an important part of care at every age.
  • School support: seating, shorter tasks, extra time, regular breaks and a teacher who understands the condition.
  • Medication: stimulant medicines such as methylphenidate and amphetamine-based drugs reduce hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention in most children who take them. Non-stimulants such as atomoxetine and guanfacine are alternatives. Possible side effects include reduced appetite, difficulty sleeping, headaches, stomach aches, mood changes and a faster heart rate, and growth and blood pressure are monitored. A specialist adjusts the dose and reviews it regularly.

What homeopathic treatment involves

Homeopathy looks at the whole child rather than the diagnosis alone. The doctor takes a detailed history of the child’s behaviour, sleep, appetite, fears, temperament, family and previous illnesses, and then prescribes an individualised medicine in a highly diluted form. Different children with ADHD can receive different medicines. Families often value that the medicines are non-habit-forming, are not associated with the appetite and sleep problems seen with stimulants, and come with time given to the whole family. Homeopathic care can be combined with the behavioural and school strategies above.

What does the research say?

A small number of studies, mostly small and short, have reported improvements in children with ADHD treated with individualised homeopathy, and some compared it with placebo or with standard medicine. However, systematic reviews that pool the research have concluded that the evidence is insufficient or of low quality, because of small numbers, differences in how studies were run and a lack of independent replication. Large national reviews of homeopathy for health conditions in general have reached a similar conclusion. In contrast, the benefit of stimulant medication and behavioural therapy for ADHD is supported by many large, well-designed trials. This does not mean that individual parents see nothing from homeopathic care, but it does mean that homeopathy should be seen as supportive care, not a proven substitute.

Side by side

Conventional treatment Homeopathic care
Main approach Behaviour therapy, school support, medication when needed Individualised medicine chosen from the whole child’s picture
Strength of evidence Strong, from many large trials and guidelines Limited and inconsistent; more good-quality research is needed
Speed of effect Medication often works within days to weeks Gradual, with follow-ups over months
Side effects Possible with medication (appetite, sleep, heart rate); monitored Medicines are highly diluted and not known to cause these effects
Best use Foundation of care, especially with significant impairment Supportive care alongside therapy and, where needed, medication

Which approach is right for your child?

  • Mild symptoms, young child: behavioural strategies and school support come first; some families add homeopathic care as a supportive measure and review progress with their doctor.
  • Significant difficulty at school, at home or with safety: medication prescribed by a specialist can make a large difference and should not be delayed because of concerns about side effects, which are monitored and manageable for most children.
  • Using both: many families do, and this is reasonable if every doctor knows what the child is taking. Never stop or change an ADHD medicine suddenly without medical advice.

What helps at home whichever route you choose

  • A predictable daily routine for meals, homework, play and sleep
  • Nine to eleven hours of sleep, with screens off an hour before bed
  • Daily physical activity and time outdoors
  • Regular, balanced meals, with a good breakfast
  • Short, clear instructions, immediate praise for good behaviour and calm, consistent consequences
  • Limiting screen time and fast-paced games

Questions to ask any doctor

  • How will we measure whether this treatment is helping?
  • What are the possible side effects, and how will they be monitored?
  • When will we review the plan, and when would we change it?
  • How does this fit with my child’s school and therapy?
