Colonoscopy is a test in which a doctor examines the inside of the large bowel with a flexible camera. It is valuable because it can both find and remove polyps – small growths that can turn into cancer over several years – during the same procedure.
What the research shows
Studies have found that people who have been screened with colonoscopy are considerably less likely to be diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer than people who have not, and that the benefit applies to both sides of the colon. Removing polyps early and finding cancer at an early stage are the main reasons.
Who should consider screening?
- People at average risk, usually starting around the age of 45–50 as advised by their doctor
- Anyone with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, who may need to start earlier
- People with long-standing inflammatory bowel disease
- Anyone with warning symptoms: blood in the stool, a persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss, anaemia or ongoing abdominal pain
What to expect
The bowel must be cleared with a preparation the day before. The test is usually done under sedation and takes under an hour, and any polyps found are removed and examined.
Complementary care
If colon cancer is diagnosed, treatment is led by a surgeon and oncologist. Homeopathic treatment can be used as supportive care alongside it.
