Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common condition in which stomach contents travel back up into the oesophagus (the food pipe). It is also called heartburn, acidity or indigestion. Occasional heartburn is normal, but when it occurs twice a week or more it should be treated, because long-standing reflux can cause complications.
Symptoms
- A burning feeling behind the breastbone, often after meals or at night
- Regurgitation of sour or bitter fluid
- Difficulty swallowing, a lump in the throat, chronic cough or hoarse voice
- Chest pain, which should always be checked to exclude heart disease
Possible complications
- Inflammation and ulcers of the oesophagus (oesophagitis)
- Narrowing (stricture) that makes swallowing hard
- Barrett’s oesophagus, a change in the lining that slightly raises the risk of oesophageal cancer
- Dental erosion and worsening asthma
Common triggers
Large or late meals, fatty and spicy food, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, smoking, obesity, pregnancy, some medicines and stress.
Management
Lifestyle changes (smaller meals, no food for three hours before bed, raising the head of the bed, weight loss) are the first step. Medicines reduce acid when needed. Endoscopy is advised if symptoms are persistent, severe or accompanied by alarm signs. Homeopathic treatment is individualised and is used for long-term digestive care.
