Multiple sclerosis (MS) literally means “many scars”. It is a chronic condition in which the immune system attacks the protective covering (myelin) of nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord, leaving scars (lesions) that disrupt messages between the brain and the body.
Common symptoms
- Numbness, tingling or weakness in the limbs, usually on one side at first
- Blurred or double vision, or pain on moving the eye (optic neuritis)
- Fatigue, dizziness and problems with balance and walking
- Muscle stiffness or spasms, bladder or bowel problems
- Difficulties with concentration and memory, and mood changes
Types
Most people start with relapsing–remitting MS, in which attacks are followed by partial or full recovery. Some later enter a progressive phase in which disability gradually builds.
Diagnosis
A neurologist diagnoses MS from the history and examination, an MRI scan of the brain and spine, and sometimes a lumbar puncture and evoked-potential tests.
Treatment
There is currently no cure, but disease-modifying medicines reduce the number of relapses and may slow progression. Steroids are used for attacks, and physiotherapy, rehabilitation and symptom treatment improve quality of life.
Supportive homeopathic care
Homeopathic treatment is individualised to the person and can be used as supportive care for symptoms and general wellbeing. It should not replace the disease-modifying treatment your neurologist recommends.
