The liver is the second-largest organ in the body. It filters the blood, makes bile, produces proteins, glucose and cholesterol, stores vitamins and iron, breaks down drugs and supports immunity. Liver cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide, largely because it often causes no symptoms until it is advanced.
Main risk factors
- Chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection
- Cirrhosis from any cause, including long-term heavy alcohol use
- Fatty liver disease linked with obesity and diabetes
- Food contaminated with aflatoxin (a mould toxin), and some inherited liver diseases
Symptoms (usually late)
Upper-right abdominal pain or a lump, swelling of the abdomen, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, yellowing of the eyes and skin, and fatigue.
Prevention and screening
- Get vaccinated against hepatitis B, and be tested for hepatitis B and C
- Treat hepatitis with modern antiviral medicines when advised
- Limit alcohol, keep a healthy weight and control diabetes
- People with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B usually have an ultrasound of the liver, often with a blood test (AFP), every six months
Treatment
Depending on the stage, treatment may include surgery, ablation, embolisation, liver transplantation or targeted and immunotherapy drugs, planned by a specialist team. Homeopathic treatment is offered only as supportive, complementary care.
