Diet is a central part of diabetes care, and one of the most useful changes is to pay attention to the type of carbohydrate you eat. Carbohydrates raise blood sugar more than any other nutrient, but they are not all equal.
The key idea: glycaemic quality
Foods that are digested slowly, such as pulses, whole grains, oats, vegetables and most fruit, release sugar gradually. Refined foods such as white bread, maida products, sweets, sugary drinks and white rice in large portions raise blood sugar quickly. Fibre slows the rise further and helps with weight and cholesterol.
Practical tips
- Fill half your plate with non-starchy vegetables, a quarter with protein (dal, fish, eggs, paneer) and a quarter with whole-grain carbohydrate
- Replace white rice and refined flour with millets, brown rice, whole wheat or oats in controlled portions
- Choose whole fruit over juice, and avoid sugary drinks
- Eat regular meals and do not skip breakfast, to avoid large swings
- Walk for 10–15 minutes after meals to lower blood sugar
- Cut down on fried and processed foods and salt
Work with your doctor
Diet plans should be fitted to your medicines, particularly insulin and tablets that can cause low blood sugar. Do not reduce or stop prescribed diabetes medicine on your own. Homeopathic treatment is offered as supportive care, and dietary counselling is a major part of our diabetes management programme.
