Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease in which clusters of immune cells called granulomas form in the body, most often in the lungs and lymph nodes, but also in the skin, eyes, liver and other organs. Its cause is not known; it is thought to involve an abnormal immune response to an unidentified trigger in people who are genetically susceptible.
Symptoms
General symptoms include tiredness, fever, swollen lymph nodes and weight loss. Lung involvement, which affects almost everyone with the disease, causes a persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, wheezing and chest discomfort. Skin involvement can cause red bumps or patches, and eye involvement can cause redness, pain, blurred vision or light sensitivity.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on a chest X-ray or CT scan, lung function tests, blood tests, eye examination and often a biopsy that shows granulomas.
Conventional treatment
Many people need no treatment because the disease settles on its own. When symptoms are significant or organs such as the lungs, eyes or heart are at risk, corticosteroids and other immune-suppressing medicines are used. Regular follow-up is important.
Homeopathic medicines commonly considered
- Phosphorus – dry cough with a tight chest, breathlessness and easy fatigue.
- Bryonia alba – dry cough with stitching chest pain worse from movement.
- Silicea – chronic, slow-healing complaints with fibrous scarring and chilliness.
- Arsenicum album – breathlessness with restlessness, anxiety and weakness, worse at night.
- Beryllium – granulomatous lung changes with a dry cough and difficulty breathing.
These are only indications; the right medicine is chosen individually after a full case history, and homeopathic treatment should be used alongside regular follow-up with your chest physician.
