Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease in which the immune system attacks the connection between nerves and muscles, causing weakness of the voluntary muscles that gets worse with activity and improves with rest. It occurs in all communities and in both sexes, but is most common in young women (under 40) and older men (over 60).
Symptoms
- Drooping of one or both eyelids (ptosis) and double vision
- Weakness of the face, difficulty chewing, a nasal or slurred voice and trouble swallowing
- Weakness of the neck, arms and legs, which is worse at the end of the day
- Breathlessness in severe cases
Diagnosis
A neurologist examines the patient and orders blood tests for acetylcholine-receptor and related antibodies, nerve conduction studies and a chest scan to look for a thymus gland tumour or enlargement.
Treatment
Medicines that improve nerve-to-muscle signalling (such as pyridostigmine), immune-suppressing drugs, plasma exchange or immunoglobulin for severe attacks, and surgery to remove the thymus gland in suitable patients. Most people can lead active lives with treatment.
Seek emergency help if
breathing or swallowing becomes difficult, which may signal a myasthenic crisis. Certain medicines can worsen the disease, so tell every doctor you see that you have it. Homeopathic treatment can be used as supportive care alongside specialist treatment.
