Surveys of working professionals show that a large share have heartburn at least once a month, and many have it weekly or daily. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common complaints in people who have used maintenance medicines for years without lasting relief.
What is the link with stress?
There is no firm evidence that stress directly causes reflux. Stress does, however, make symptoms worse in several ways: it makes the gut more sensitive to normal amounts of acid, it leads to habits that trigger reflux (skipped or hurried meals, late dinners, coffee, smoking, alcohol, junk food), and it disturbs sleep.
What you can do to prevent reflux returning
- Eat meals at regular times, chew well and do not eat in a rush or while working
- Have dinner at least three hours before bedtime and avoid large evening meals
- Cut down on coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, alcohol, fried and very spicy food, and stop smoking
- Raise the head of the bed and avoid tight clothing around the waist
- Lose excess weight, especially around the abdomen
- Practise stress control: slow breathing, regular exercise, enough sleep and breaks from work
