Roughly one in six couples has difficulty conceiving, and it affects men and women equally. While some causes need medical treatment, these ten everyday steps can help support fertility for both partners.
The ten steps
- Limit exposure to harmful chemicals. Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke, wash fruit and vegetables well, and reduce use of plastics that contain BPA and phthalates.
- Drink clean water. Use filtered or boiled water and stay well hydrated.
- Eat a fertility-friendly diet. Choose vegetables, fruit, whole grains, pulses, nuts, seeds and good-quality protein.
- Choose healthy fats. Include olive oil, nuts, seeds and fish, and avoid trans fats found in many packaged and fried foods.
- Reach and keep a healthy weight. Being underweight or overweight can disturb ovulation and lower sperm quality.
- Exercise regularly but moderately. Brisk walking, yoga or swimming help; extreme exercise can disturb cycles.
- Prioritise sleep. Aim for seven to eight hours at regular times.
- Limit alcohol and caffeine, and avoid recreational drugs.
- Manage stress. Try breathing exercises, meditation, time outdoors and talking with your partner or a counsellor.
- Know your fertile window. Intercourse every one to two days in the days leading up to and including ovulation gives the best chance; check thyroid, vitamin D and other basic tests with your doctor.
Both partners matter
Men can improve sperm quality by stopping smoking, avoiding excess heat on the testicles (hot baths, laptops on the lap), keeping a healthy weight and eating well. If you have been trying for a year, or for six months if the woman is over 35, consult a fertility doctor. Homeopathic treatment can be a supportive part of the plan.
