Good nutrition supports hormone balance, egg and sperm quality and a healthy pregnancy. There is no single “fertility vitamin”, but several nutrients have good evidence or reasonable support.
Folic acid (vitamin B9)
Women trying to conceive are advised to take folic acid daily, usually starting at least a month before conception, because it lowers the risk of neural tube defects in the baby.
Vitamin D
Low vitamin D levels are common in India and have been linked with irregular cycles and reduced success with fertility treatment. A blood test shows whether you need a supplement and at what dose.
Vitamins C and E
These antioxidants help protect eggs and sperm from oxidative damage. In men, studies suggest that antioxidants may improve sperm quality in some cases.
Vitamin B12 and iron
Deficiency of B12 or iron can affect ovulation and general health, and is particularly common in vegetarians. They should be checked and corrected if low.
Zinc, selenium and omega-3
Zinc and selenium are important for sperm production, and omega-3 fats from fish, flaxseed and walnuts support hormone health.
Safety
More is not better: high doses of some vitamins, such as vitamin A, can be harmful, especially in pregnancy. Get your levels tested, take supplements at doses your doctor advises, and aim to get most nutrients from a varied diet.
