Homeopathic treatment for skin and hair conditions at Welling Homeopathy, Mumbai

Losing some hair every day is normal, but when the comb, pillow and shower drain show far more than usual, or the parting widens and the hairline recedes, it is natural to worry. Hair loss has many causes, from genetics and hormones to stress, deficiencies and illness, and the right approach depends on which type you have. This page explains the hair cycle, the causes and types of hair loss, how it is assessed and treated, and how homeopathic care is offered as individualised support.

Hair loss at a glance

  • What is normal: losing about 50 to 100 hairs a day; more than that, or visible thinning, needs attention.
  • Main types: androgenetic (pattern) baldness, telogen effluvium (diffuse shedding), alopecia areata (patchy) and traction hair loss.
  • Common causes: genes and hormones, stress or illness, deficiencies, thyroid problems, medicines and harsh hair practices.
  • See a doctor for: sudden patches, scalp pain or scaling, or hair loss with tiredness or irregular periods.
  • Our approach: individualised homeopathic care alongside finding and correcting the cause.

What is hair loss?

At any time about nine in ten scalp hairs are growing. Each follicle follows a cycle: the anagen growth phase lasts two to six years, the catagen transition phase two to three weeks, and the telogen resting phase two to three months, after which the hair is shed and a new one grows. Hair loss means losing well over the normal 50 to 100 hairs a day, or failing to replace them.

The main types are: androgenetic alopecia, inherited pattern baldness that affects both men (receding hairline and crown) and women (diffuse thinning at the crown); telogen effluvium, a temporary shedding after stress, illness, childbirth or crash dieting; alopecia areata, patchy autoimmune hair loss; traction alopecia from tight hairstyles; involutional alopecia, gradual thinning with age; and trichotillomania, hair pulling, most often seen in children.

Symptoms of hair loss

Common symptoms include:

  • More hair than usual on the pillow, comb or in the drain
  • A widening parting or a thinner ponytail
  • A receding hairline and thinning at the crown
  • Round or oval bald patches
  • Hair breakage and thin, dull hair
  • An itchy, flaky or tender scalp
  • Loss of eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair in some conditions
  • Visible scalp, especially under bright light

Causes and risk factors of hair loss

Common causes and risk factors include:

  • Genes and hormones: inherited sensitivity to male hormones causes pattern baldness.
  • Physical or emotional stress, fever, surgery and illness, including after COVID-19.
  • Deficiencies: low iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and protein.
  • Thyroid disorders and hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Autoimmune disease: alopecia areata, and scarring conditions such as lichen planus and lupus.
  • Scalp infections such as ringworm, and dandruff.
  • Medicines used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems and high blood pressure.
  • Hair practices: tight styles, harsh colours, chemical straightening and heat styling, and poor nutrition.

How hair loss is diagnosed

A doctor assesses hair loss by looking at the pattern of loss, examining the scalp and asking about your health, diet and medicines. Tests may include:

  • Hair pull test to see how easily hair comes out
  • Blood tests for haemoglobin, ferritin (iron stores), vitamin D, vitamin B12 and thyroid function
  • Hormone tests in women with irregular periods, acne or excess hair growth
  • Scalp examination with a dermatoscope, and a scalp scraping to look for fungus
  • Scalp biopsy in unclear or scarring hair loss

Warning signs: when to get urgent help

Please see a doctor promptly if there is:

  • Sudden patches of hair loss or very rapid shedding
  • A painful, red, scaly or pus-filled scalp
  • Hair loss with tiredness, weight change, feeling very cold or hot, or irregular periods
  • Hair loss that began after starting a new medicine
  • Hair loss in a child, or loss of eyebrows and body hair

Conventional treatment options

Treatment depends on the type of hair loss:

  • Treating the cause: correcting deficiencies, thyroid and hormonal problems, and stopping or changing medicines that cause shedding
  • Minoxidil lotion or foam for pattern hair loss, used long term
  • Finasteride in men, and anti-androgen medicines for some women, prescribed by a doctor
  • Steroid injections or creams for patchy alopecia areata
  • Procedures such as platelet-rich plasma therapy, low-level laser and hair transplantation in selected people

Homeopathic medicines commonly considered for hair loss

These medicines are commonly considered in homeopathy for hair loss, with the symptom picture traditionally associated with each. They are listed for general information, not as a prescription.

Phosphoric acid: hair loss after grief, shock or long strain, with exhaustion and early greying.

Natrum muriaticum: hair loss after emotional hurt or grief, with an oily scalp and a craving for salt.

Sepia: hair loss after childbirth or during hormonal change, with tiredness and irritability.

Lycopodium: hair loss and early baldness with digestive weakness and bloating.

Silicea: thin, brittle hair with a sweaty scalp, in chilly, thin people with slow healing.

The right medicine is chosen only after detailed case-taking by an experienced doctor.

Self-care and lifestyle tips

These measures support general health and may ease symptoms, but they do not replace treatment when it is needed.

  • Eat a balanced diet with enough protein, iron-rich foods, nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables and fruit.
  • Ask your doctor to test iron or ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and thyroid levels before taking supplements.
  • Wash your hair gently as often as needed, and avoid very hot water and harsh chemicals.
  • Avoid tight hairstyles and heat styling, and be gentle when combing wet hair.
  • Manage stress with sleep, exercise, yoga and breathing exercises.
  • Be patient: new hair takes three to six months to show once the cause is addressed.

Frequently asked questions about hair loss

1. What is the homeopathic treatment for hair loss?

Homeopathic treatment is individualised: the medicine is chosen after detailed case-taking, based on the type and cause of hair loss and your general health. Phosphoric acid, Natrum muriaticum, Sepia and Lycopodium are among those traditionally considered. It is offered as supportive care.

2. How many hairs do we lose in a day?

About 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Noticeably more than that over several weeks needs attention.

3. Why does hair fall after fever, childbirth or stress?

A major stress or hormonal change pushes more hairs into the resting phase, and they shed two to three months later. This telogen effluvium usually recovers within six to twelve months.

4. Which tests are useful for hair loss?

Doctors often check haemoglobin and iron or ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and thyroid function, and sometimes hormones in women with irregular periods.

5. Can I consult Welling Homeopathy online for hair loss?

Yes. You can share photographs, your history and reports and consult our specialists online from anywhere. We have been consulting patients online for 25 years.

6. Which is the best homeopathic medicine for hair loss?

There is no single best homeopathic medicine for hair loss. Phosphoric acid, Natrum muriaticum, Sepia, Lycopodium and Silicea are among the medicines traditionally considered, but the right medicine depends on your symptoms, what brings them on or eases them, your general health and your personality. At Welling Homeopathy our specialists choose it after a detailed case-taking, so please consult them rather than choosing a medicine yourself.

7. How long does homeopathic treatment for hair loss take?

The duration depends on how long you have had hair loss, how severe it is, what treatment you have already taken and your general health. Some people notice a change in their symptoms within weeks, while others need several months of regular follow-up. Your specialist will explain what to expect at your first consultation and review your progress at each follow-up.

8. Is it safe to take homeopathic medicines along with my current medicines for hair loss?

Homeopathic medicines are highly diluted and are not known to interfere with other medicines, but you should always tell your doctor and our specialists about everything you take. Please do not stop, skip or change any prescribed medicine on your own; any change should be discussed with the doctor who prescribed it.

9. What are the early signs of hair loss?

More hair on the pillow, comb and in the drain, a widening parting and a receding hairline or thinning crown are the usual early signs of hair loss.

10. What should I eat or avoid if I have hair loss?

Eat enough protein, iron-rich foods, green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, and avoid crash diets. Ask your doctor to test iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and thyroid before taking supplements.

11. What is the difference between conventional and homeopathic treatment of hair loss?

Conventional treatment of hair loss uses correction of deficiencies and thyroid problems, minoxidil, finasteride in men, steroid treatment for patchy loss and procedures such as hair transplantation. Homeopathic treatment, in contrast, is individualised: the medicine is chosen for you as a whole person, after detailed case-taking, and is offered alongside the conventional care that your doctor advises.

12. Who is the best homeopathy doctor for hair loss in Mumbai?

Dr. Sourabh Welling, M.D., founder of Welling Homeopathy, Mumbai, who has over 25 years of experience, treats hair loss with individualised homeopathic care, together with a team of senior specialists. You can consult him and the team at our Mumbai clinics or online.

14. What are the main types of hair loss?

Androgenetic (pattern) hair loss, telogen effluvium (shedding after stress or illness), alopecia areata, traction and scarring alopecias.

15. When should I see a doctor about hair loss?

For sudden or patchy loss, scalp pain or scarring, or loss with other symptoms such as tiredness or irregular periods.

16. What is the homeopathic approach to hair loss?

Homeopathic treatment is individualised: after detailed case-taking, a plan is made for you alongside any treatment your doctor advises. Please do not stop or change any prescribed medicine (such as steroid creams or tablets) on your own; discuss any change with the doctor who prescribed it.
