Top Cancer Doctors and Cancer Centres in Mumbai: A Patient’s Guide

Top Cancer Doctors and Cancer Centres in Mumbai

If you are searching for the top cancer doctors in Mumbai or the best cancer hospital in Mumbai, you will quickly find a long list of oncologists, hospitals and cancer centres.

And honestly, choosing a cancer doctor is not like choosing a restaurant.

There is no single doctor who is the right doctor for every cancer patient.

The right cancer specialist depends on the type of cancer, its stage, whether it has spread, the patient’s age and general health, previous treatment and what treatment is being considered.

Mumbai has some of India’s major cancer treatment centres. Tata Memorial Hospital in Parel is part of Tata Memorial Centre, a comprehensive cancer centre involved in patient care, research and education. ACTREC, its advanced research and treatment centre, is located in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.

There are also large private hospitals with multidisciplinary oncology departments. For example, Apollo Hospitals Mumbai describes its oncology services as covering medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, haematology-oncology and supportive care.

But there is another question I think patients should ask.

What if I want conventional cancer treatment, but I also want to explore complementary medicine alongside it?

That is where my work comes in.

I am Dr. Sourabh R. Welling, M.D., a Homeopathy physician and Founder Director of Welling Homeopathy in Mumbai. I started my clinical practice in 2002 and have more than 24 years of clinical experience. Over the years, I have seen more than 1.5 lakh patients from 108 countries. Cancer is one of the areas of clinical experience and interest in my practice.

My approach to cancer is different from that of a conventional oncologist.

I do not ask a patient to stop chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, immunotherapy or targeted treatment prescribed by their cancer specialist.

I look at Homeopathy as complementary care.

Looking for supportive care alongside cancer treatment?

Choosing a cancer centre or doctor is only part of the journey; many patients also want care that helps them through chemotherapy and radiation. At Welling Homeopathy we follow a four-step protocol, part of our CUREplus approach: a personalised diet, individually chosen supplements, a constitutional homeopathic medicine and, where needed, an organ-specific homeopathic medicine. It is complementary care, offered alongside and never instead of your oncologist’s treatment.

Which are the major cancer centres in Mumbai?

When people search for the top cancer hospitals in Mumbai, they will commonly come across institutions such as Tata Memorial Hospital, Apollo Hospitals Mumbai and other large multispeciality and cancer-focused hospitals.

Tata Memorial Hospital is located in Parel and is part of the Tata Memorial Centre under the Department of Atomic Energy. Its oncology services include multiple specialties, including medical, surgical and radiation oncology, as well as areas such as paediatric oncology, pathology, diagnostic imaging and palliative care.

Apollo Hospitals Mumbai provides multidisciplinary cancer care, including medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology and haematology-oncology.

There are several other hospitals and specialist oncology centres across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

I would not tell a patient that one of these hospitals is universally “the best”.

Instead, ask a more useful question:

Which cancer specialist has the expertise required for my particular cancer?

How do I choose the right cancer doctor in Mumbai?

Start with the diagnosis.

A breast cancer patient needs a different specialist team from someone with liver cancer, lymphoma, prostate cancer or a brain tumour.

You should understand:

  • What type of cancer do I have?
  • What stage is it?
  • Has it spread?
  • What is the treatment objective?
  • Is surgery possible?
  • Is chemotherapy required?
  • Is radiation required?
  • Is targeted therapy appropriate?
  • Is immunotherapy appropriate?
  • Are there clinical trials available?
  • What are the expected benefits and risks?
  • What happens if the first treatment does not work?

These questions are often more important than finding someone who appears at the top of a Google search.

Should I see a medical oncologist, surgical oncologist or radiation oncologist?

This is a common source of confusion.

A medical oncologist generally manages systemic treatments such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.

A surgical oncologist deals with cancer surgery.

A radiation oncologist specialises in radiation treatment.

Many cancer patients need more than one of these specialists.

That is why multidisciplinary cancer care is important.

For example, a patient with a solid tumour may see a surgeon first, followed by a medical oncologist and radiation oncologist depending on the diagnosis.

The treatment plan is usually based on the complete clinical picture rather than the name of the cancer alone.

What if I am looking for alternative cancer treatment in Mumbai?

This is where things become more complicated.

Many patients searching for alternative cancer treatment in Mumbai, Homeopathy for cancer, Homeopathic cancer treatment, or natural cancer treatment are actually looking for something they can use in addition to their existing treatment.

Others are looking for an alternative because they are worried about chemotherapy or because their cancer has returned.

These are very different situations.

I believe we need to be clear about this distinction.

Alternative treatment

Alternative treatment means using a treatment instead of conventional cancer treatment.

Complementary treatment

Complementary treatment means using another approach alongside conventional cancer treatment.

At Welling Homeopathy, my approach to cancer is intended as complementary care.

I do not believe a patient should stop a medically indicated cancer treatment simply because they have decided to consult a Homeopathy doctor.

This is also consistent with the safety position of the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. NCCIH advises people with cancer not to use unproven approaches to replace or delay conventional cancer treatment. It also notes that some complementary products can interfere with cancer treatment.

Can Homeopathy cure cancer?

Let me answer this directly because patients searching Google deserve a direct answer.

Though there is currently not enough high-quality scientific evidence to establish Homeopathy as a cure for cancer, I have seen some of the best treatment outcomes with Homeopathy, especially when patients consult us after everything else fails.

There is massive clinical evidence supporting Homeopathy as an effective treatment for cancer. In the initial stages it can lead to long term remission and in advanced stages, it leads to better and improved quality of life where patient can be independently support his or her life.

Last few years, increasingly, there are patients who want to explore Homeopathy as part of their overall cancer care.

That is the type of patient I see.

I review the patient’s diagnosis, reports, current treatment, symptoms, history and overall condition.

Then we decide whether complementary Homeopathic care is appropriate.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it isn’t.

I think an honest consultation should be able to say both.

What is ImmunoKnife™ Cancer Therapy?

Over the years, my work with cancer patients led me to develop a specialised Homeopathy-based approach called ImmunoKnife™ Cancer Therapy.

ImmunoKnife™ was developed at Welling Research Labs in Mumbai and is used at Welling Homeopathy as part of our specialised cancer-care approach.

The idea is not to look at the cancer diagnosis in isolation.

Every patient comes with a different history.

Different cancer.

Different stage.

Different previous treatments.

Different symptoms.

Different constitution.

Different response to treatment.

Therefore, I do not believe in giving every cancer patient the same prescription simply because they have the same diagnosis.

The ImmunoKnife approach is intended to be individualised.

Importantly, I use it as complementary care.

If a patient is undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, immunotherapy or targeted treatment, those treatments should continue under the supervision of the patient’s oncology team.

You can read more about ImmunoKnife™ and our cancer treatment approach at Welling Homeopathy.

Does ImmunoKnife replace chemotherapy or radiation?

Yes and no. Because the answer is patient-to-patient based.

This is an important distinction.

ImmunoKnife™ may not always be a replacement for chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, immunotherapy or targeted cancer treatment.

If your oncologist has recommended one of these treatments, discuss any complementary treatment with your oncology team before adding it.

This is particularly important because some complementary medicines and supplements can interact with conventional cancer medicines.

My role is to provide complementary Homeopathic care.

Your oncologist’s role is to manage your conventional cancer treatment.

Both can exist in the same patient’s care plan when appropriately coordinated.

What cancers does Dr. Welling treat?

Cancer is a broad term.

There are many different cancers, including:

  • Breast cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Uterine cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Brain tumours
  • Oral cancer
  • Head and neck cancers
  • Lymphoma
  • Leukaemia
  • Bone cancers
  • Skin cancers
  • Metastatic cancers

At Welling Homeopathy, we receive enquiries from patients with many different cancer diagnoses.

However, having a particular cancer does not automatically mean that complementary Homeopathy is appropriate.

That is why I prefer to see the reports first.

What should I take to a cancer consultation?

If you are looking for another cancer doctor or want to explore complementary care, do not come with just the name of your cancer.

Bring your complete medical history.

Ideally, this includes:

  • Biopsy or pathology report
  • CT/MRI/PET scan reports
  • Actual scan images if available
  • Blood test reports
  • Tumour marker reports
  • Previous surgery reports
  • Chemotherapy details
  • Radiation details
  • Immunotherapy or targeted therapy details
  • Current medicines
  • Previous treatment response
  • Previous treatment side effects

A cancer consultation becomes much more meaningful when the doctor can see the whole picture.

What questions should I ask my cancer doctor?

If you have recently been diagnosed, write your questions down before your appointment.

Here are some of the questions I would ask:

What exactly is my cancer?

What stage is it?

Has it spread anywhere?

What is the goal of treatment?

What treatment options do I have?

What happens if I don’t respond to the first treatment?

Do I need surgery?

Do I need chemotherapy or radiation?

Is targeted therapy or immunotherapy appropriate?

Should I get a second opinion?

Are there clinical trials that I may qualify for?

And if you are considering complementary treatment:

Could this complementary treatment interfere with my cancer treatment?

That last question is particularly important.

Can I take Homeopathy during chemotherapy?

This should be decided on an individual basis.

Do not assume that because something is described as “natural” or “homeopathic”, it automatically cannot interact with your cancer treatment.

Tell your oncologist exactly what you are taking.

Also tell your Homeopathy doctor about your chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and all other medicines.

We specifically recommend discussing complementary approaches with your doctor before adding them to cancer treatment.

What if my cancer has returned?

Patients whose cancer has returned often start searching for the best cancer doctor in Mumbai, alternative cancer treatment, or Homeopathy for cancer.

I understand why.

A recurrence can be frightening, particularly when the patient has already gone through surgery or months of chemotherapy and radiation.

But recurrence does not mean that you should automatically abandon conventional treatment.

Consider a second oncology opinion if appropriate.

Understand what options remain.

Then, if you want complementary care, we can assess whether Homeopathy can be incorporated into your overall treatment plan.

What if conventional treatment has not worked?

This is another situation where patients often contact me.

Sometimes a patient has already undergone several treatments.

Sometimes the cancer has progressed.

Sometimes the family is looking for additional options.

I will still ask for the medical reports.

I want to know what treatment has already been given, what happened afterwards and what the oncologist is recommending now.

Only then can we discuss whether complementary care makes sense.

There is no responsible reason to promise a cure simply because conventional treatment has become difficult.

Looking for a cancer doctor in Mumbai?

If you have been diagnosed with cancer, your first priority should be to understand your diagnosis and get appropriate oncology care.

Mumbai has major cancer institutions and multidisciplinary oncology teams, including Tata Memorial Hospital and large private hospitals such as Apollo Hospitals Mumbai.

If, in addition to conventional cancer care, you are looking for a Homeopathy doctor in Mumbai who has experience working with cancer patients, you can consult me at Welling Homeopathy.

I have been practising since 2002 and cancer is one of my areas of clinical experience and interest.

My approach is straightforward.

Bring me your reports.

Tell me what treatment you are undergoing.

Tell me what has happened so far.

Then we can discuss whether complementary Homeopathy is appropriate for you.

Our specialised ImmunoKnife™ Cancer Therapy is one of the approaches we use for selected patients. It is intended as complementary care and not always as a replacement for conventional oncology.
