Homeopathy treatment for kidney

Puffy eyelids in the morning, swollen feet by evening, frothy urine and a child or adult who suddenly puts on weight with fluid: these are the signs of nephrotic syndrome, a condition in which the kidneys leak large amounts of protein into the urine. It is common in children and can also affect adults, and it is often a relapsing illness. This guide explains what happens in the kidneys, how it is monitored, how to reduce the risk of relapses and complications, and the homeopathic medicines traditionally considered, along with how our specialists approach each person.

Nephrotic syndrome: quick answers

  • What is it? A kidney condition in which the filters leak protein, causing swelling, low blood protein and high cholesterol.
  • Typical signs: Swollen face and eyelids, swollen legs and abdomen, frothy urine, weight gain from fluid and tiredness.
  • Common in: Children between 2 and 8 years (most often minimal change disease), and in adults with other kidney conditions.
  • Relapses: Infections often trigger relapses, so early care for fever and colds matters.
  • Our approach: Meet our specialists for your personal best homeopathic remedy and a plan that supports your recovery and kidney health.

About nephrotic syndrome

The kidneys contain about a million tiny filters (glomeruli) that clean the blood and keep proteins in. In nephrotic syndrome the filters become leaky, and large amounts of protein, mostly albumin, pass into the urine. With low albumin in the blood, fluid leaks into the tissues, causing swelling (oedema) of the eyelids, legs, abdomen and sometimes lungs; cholesterol levels rise and the person is more prone to infections and blood clots.

In children, the commonest cause is minimal change disease, which usually responds to steroid treatment but tends to relapse. In adults, it may be caused by conditions such as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, membranous nephropathy, diabetes, lupus or medicines. Diagnosis involves urine protein tests, blood tests and sometimes a kidney biopsy, and is directed by a kidney specialist.

Because relapses, infections, diet and emotional wellbeing all affect the course, daily care matters. Our specialists take a detailed history of each person’s swelling, appetite, infections, steroid response and temperament, and plan a personal homeopathic approach to support the kidneys and general health alongside the prescribed treatment.

Common symptoms of nephrotic syndrome

Symptoms vary from person to person. Common ones include:

  • Puffiness of the eyes and face, especially in the morning
  • Swelling of the feet, ankles, abdomen and genitals
  • Frothy or foamy urine
  • Weight gain from fluid retention, and decreased urine output
  • Tiredness, poor appetite and nausea
  • Infections that are frequent or severe
  • In some, breathlessness from fluid around the lungs

Causes and risk factors of nephrotic syndrome

There is rarely a single cause. Factors that may contribute include:

  • Minimal change disease, the commonest cause in children
  • Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and membranous nephropathy in adults
  • Diabetes, lupus and other conditions that damage the kidney filters
  • Infections, such as hepatitis B and C or HIV, in some people
  • Certain medicines, including some painkillers
  • Genetic forms, rarely, in young children
  • Unknown cause (idiopathic) in many cases

Warning signs and when to get urgent help

Please go to the nearest hospital emergency department immediately if there is:

  • Fever with abdominal pain or a tense, swollen abdomen (possible peritonitis)
  • Breathlessness, chest pain or rapid breathing
  • Pain, swelling or redness of one leg, or severe headache with vomiting (possible clot)
  • Very little or no urine for 12 hours or more
  • Vomiting, drowsiness, confusion or fits
  • Severe infection such as cellulitis, or a child who is very unwell

Homeopathic medicines for nephrotic syndrome

The medicines below are commonly considered in homeopathy for nephrotic syndrome, with the symptom picture traditionally associated with each. They are listed for general information, not as a prescription.

(1) Apis mellifica: Puffy, pale, water-bag-like swelling of the eyelids, face and limbs with scanty urine, stinging pains and thirstlessness, worse from heat.

(2) Apocynum cannabinum: Considered traditionally for dropsy with scanty urine and marked thirst, general swelling and a feeling of weight and heaviness.

(3) Arsenicum album: Swelling with great weakness, restlessness, anxiety, thirst for sips of water and burning pains, worse after midnight.

(4) Terebinthina: Scanty, dark, smoky or bloody urine with burning, swelling and a sensation of strain in the kidney region.

(5) Helleborus niger: Dropsical swelling with dullness, scanty dark urine and a slow response, often after an acute illness.

(6) Cantharis: Burning, cutting pain on passing urine, with scanty, blood-streaked urine and constant urging.

(7) Solidago virgaurea: Kidney pain and scanty, offensive or dark urine, with a feeling of fullness in the kidney area, traditionally used as a kidney remedy.

(8) Phosphorus: Kidney involvement with albumin in the urine, fatigue, burning and thirst for cold water, in sensitive, thin persons.

(9) Lycopodium clavatum: Red sand in the urine with pain before urinating, bloating and fullness, and symptoms worse in the late afternoon.

(10) Natrum muriaticum: Puffiness with weakness, a desire for salt and cold water, emotional sensitivity and a tendency to hold grief.

Self-care and lifestyle tips

These measures support general health and may ease symptoms, but they do not replace treatment when it is needed.

  • Take prescribed steroids and other medicines exactly as directed, and never stop them suddenly.
  • Use less salt, and avoid pickles, papad, chips and processed food while there is swelling; follow your dietician’s advice on fluids and protein.
  • Test the first morning urine for protein as taught, and keep a diary of weight and swelling.
  • Keep vaccinations up to date, including flu and pneumonia vaccines, and ask about chickenpox exposure when on steroids.
  • Treat fever, sore throat, cough and diarrhoea promptly, since infections often trigger relapses.
  • Maintain hygiene and avoid people with infections, and wash hands often.
  • Avoid painkillers such as diclofenac and ibuprofen, herbal products and self-medication, which can harm the kidneys.

Frequently asked questions about nephrotic syndrome

1. What are the first signs of nephrotic syndrome?

Puffy eyelids in the morning, swollen feet, frothy urine and weight gain from fluid. Children may be irritable and have a poor appetite.

2. Is nephrotic syndrome in children dangerous?

Most children respond to treatment, but relapses are common and infections can be serious, so careful follow-up is important.

3. What triggers a relapse?

Infections such as colds and diarrhoea are the commonest triggers, along with stopping medicines suddenly. Early care for infections reduces relapses.

4. What diet is advised?

Low salt, adequate protein and calories, and normal fluid unless advised otherwise. A dietician can tailor this to your needs.

5. Can homeopathy help in nephrotic syndrome?

Homeopathy is offered as individualised care alongside your current treatment. Our specialists study your history, swelling, infections and temperament to choose your personal remedy and a plan that supports your recovery and kidney health.

6. Can a child with nephrotic syndrome go to school?

Yes, once the child is well, with attention to infections, regular medicines and follow-up.

7. Is a kidney biopsy always needed?

Not always in young children who respond to steroids, but it is often advised in adults and in children who do not respond or relapse frequently.
