Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become a major public health problem in India and across the world. Studies suggest that a very large number of people live with CKD without knowing it, because it causes few symptoms until it is advanced. Detected early, its progression can often be slowed.
What is chronic kidney disease?
CKD is a slow, progressive loss of the kidneys’ ability to filter waste and excess fluid from the blood. It is graded in five stages by a measurement called the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
Risk factors
- Diabetes and high blood pressure, the two leading causes
- Family history of kidney disease
- Recurrent kidney stones or urinary infections
- Long-term use of painkillers such as NSAIDs, and some herbal or unregulated medicines
- Obesity, smoking and age over 60
Symptoms
Early CKD often has none. Later signs include fatigue, swelling of the feet, ankles or face, foamy urine, passing urine more or less often, nausea, loss of appetite, itching and difficulty concentrating.
Tests
A blood creatinine level with eGFR, a urine test for protein (albumin), blood pressure measurement and a kidney ultrasound. People with diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history should be tested every year.
Slowing progression
Keep blood pressure and blood sugar well controlled, reduce salt, avoid unnecessary painkillers, stay hydrated as advised, do not smoke and follow your nephrologist’s advice. Homeopathic treatment is individualised and can be used as supportive care alongside regular kidney follow-up.
