Quick answers: homeopathy for reactive arthritis

  • What it is: Joint inflammation triggered by an infection elsewhere, often gut or urinary.
  • Typical sign: Painful, swollen knees or ankles weeks after an infection, sometimes with red eyes.
  • See a doctor if: Joint swelling follows diarrhoea or a urinary or genital infection, or the eyes become painful.
  • Homeopathy: Individualised, supportive care alongside medical treatment.

About reactive arthritis

In reactive arthritis, the immune system responds to an infection, commonly after food poisoning with Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter or after chlamydia, and causes inflammation in the joints even though the joint itself is not infected.

It usually starts 1 to 4 weeks after the infection. For many people it settles within months, but some develop a long-lasting or recurring form. It is related to the family of spondyloarthropathies, along with ankylosing spondylitis.

Common symptoms of reactive arthritis

Symptoms vary from person to person. Common ones include:

  • Pain and swelling in the knees, ankles or feet
  • Heel pain or swollen toes (sausage toe)
  • Low back pain and stiffness
  • Red, sore eyes (conjunctivitis or uveitis)
  • Burning on passing urine
  • Skin rash on the palms and soles in some people

Causes and risk factors of reactive arthritis

There is rarely a single cause. Factors that may contribute include:

  • Gut infections such as Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, Yersinia
  • Genital or urinary infection such as chlamydia
  • The HLA-B27 gene increases the risk
  • Immune response after infection
  • Male sex and young adult age are more common
  • Often no clear infection is found

When to see a doctor

Get a proper medical assessment rather than waiting for the problem to settle on its own, and seek urgent care if you notice any of the following:

  • Joint swelling following diarrhoea or a urinary or genital infection
  • Painful, red eyes or blurring of vision, which needs urgent eye assessment
  • A very hot swollen joint with fever
  • Persisting symptoms beyond a few weeks
  • Back stiffness that is worse in the morning

Homeopathic medicines for reactive arthritis

The medicines below are commonly considered in homeopathy for reactive arthritis, with the symptom picture traditionally associated with each. They are listed for general information, not as a prescription.

(1) Rhus toxicodendron: traditionally considered for stiff, swollen joints that are worse at the start of movement and better with continued motion.

(2) Bryonia alba: considered where joint pain is worse on every movement and relieved by rest.

(3) Pulsatilla nigricans: traditionally considered for wandering joint pains that shift from joint to joint and are better in cool open air.

(4) Thuja occidentalis: considered for joint complaints after infection with genital or urinary involvement, per traditional materia medica.

(5) Ledum palustre: traditionally used for swollen, painful joints that feel better with cold applications.

Homeopathic treatment of reactive arthritis at Welling Homeopathy

These are only basic indications – many more homeopathic medicines are used for reactive arthritis, and the right one is chosen after detailed case-taking by an experienced doctor.

Homeopathy is offered as individualised, supportive care. Reliable scientific evidence that homeopathy treats reactive arthritis is limited, so it should not replace a medical diagnosis or any treatment your doctor considers necessary, and you should not stop or change current medicines without medical advice.

Self-care and lifestyle tips

These measures support general health and may ease symptoms, but they do not replace treatment when it is needed.

  • Rest affected joints during flares
  • Use warm or cold packs for comfort
  • Do gentle range-of-motion exercises
  • Treat any infection fully, including a partner if needed
  • Practise safe sex and good food hygiene

Frequently asked questions about reactive arthritis

1. Is reactive arthritis contagious?

No. The arthritis itself is not contagious, though the infection that triggered it may be, for example a sexually transmitted infection that needs treatment.

2. How long does reactive arthritis last?

Most cases settle within 3 to 6 months. A minority develop a chronic course or recurrences.

3. Do I need antibiotics for reactive arthritis?

If an ongoing infection such as chlamydia is found, it is treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics do not treat the arthritis itself. Your doctor will advise.

4. Can reactive arthritis affect the eyes?

Yes. Eye inflammation can occur and needs prompt assessment by an eye doctor.

5. Can homeopathy help with reactive arthritis?

Homeopathy is offered as individualised, supportive care to help manage joint pain and stiffness, alongside the diagnosis and medical care your doctor advises.

6. Can I take homeopathic medicines along with my current medicines for reactive arthritis?

Homeopathic medicines are highly diluted and are not known to interfere with other medicines, but please tell your doctor and our specialists about everything you take. Do not stop, skip or change any prescribed medicine on your own; any change should be discussed with the doctor who prescribed it.
