Homeopathic treatment for skin and hair conditions at Welling Homeopathy, Mumbai

Acne is a skin condition in which the hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells and then inflamed, causing blackheads, pimples and sometimes deeper cysts that scar. It affects almost everyone at puberty and many adults too. Homeopathy is offered as individualised, supportive care alongside good skin care and, where needed, dermatological treatment. This page explains the grades, causes and treatment options for acne, and how our specialists approach it.

Acne at a glance

  • What it is: blocked, inflamed hair follicles and oil glands, usually on the face, chest, shoulders and back.
  • Grades: mild (blackheads and whiteheads), moderate (papules and pustules), severe (many pustules and nodules) and cystic (cysts and scarring).
  • Main causes: hormones, excess oil, bacteria, genetics, stress and some medicines.
  • See a doctor for: painful nodules, scarring, or acne with irregular periods or excess hair growth.
  • Our approach: individualised homeopathic care alongside a gentle skin-care routine.

What is acne?

Each hair follicle in the skin is connected to an oil gland that makes sebum. When too much sebum is made, it mixes with dead skin cells and blocks the pore. The blocked follicle swells, bacteria multiply inside it, and the surrounding skin becomes red and inflamed, forming a pimple.

Acne is graded by severity. Grade 1 (mild) has blackheads, whiteheads and a few papules; grade 2 (moderate) adds more papules and some pustules; grade 3 (severe) has mainly pustules and a few nodules; and grade 4 (cystic) has cysts, nodules and scarring. Early, appropriate care helps to prevent dark marks and scars.

Symptoms of acne

Common symptoms include:

  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Red, tender pimples
  • Pus-filled pimples
  • Painful, deep nodules and cysts
  • Oily skin, especially on the forehead, nose and chin
  • Acne on the chest, shoulders and back
  • Dark marks or scars after healing
  • Flares before periods in women

Causes and risk factors of acne

Common causes and risk factors include:

  • Hormones: androgens, present in both men and women, rise at puberty and change with periods, pregnancy, contraceptive pills and menopause.
  • Genetics: acne often runs in families.
  • Bacteria: Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) multiplies in blocked follicles.
  • Medicines: steroids, testosterone and some hormonal medicines can cause severe outbreaks.
  • Stress and poor sleep, which can alter hormones and worsen flares.
  • Diet: sugary and refined food, and for some people dairy, may aggravate acne.
  • Cosmetics: heavy, oily creams and make-up that block pores.
  • Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome in women.

How acne is diagnosed

Acne is diagnosed by examining the skin, noting your age of onset, where the spots appear and whether blackheads are present. Your doctor may also:

  • Ask about your periods, hair growth and medicines
  • Advise blood tests for hormones, if acne comes with irregular periods or excess hair
  • Advise an ultrasound for polycystic ovaries, where suspected
  • Look for scarring and decide how early to treat to prevent it

Warning signs: when to get urgent help

Please see a doctor promptly if there is:

  • Painful, deep nodules or cysts, or acne that leaves scars
  • Sudden acne in adulthood with irregular periods, excess hair growth or weight gain
  • Acne after starting a new medicine or supplement
  • Signs of infection such as spreading redness, swelling, pain and fever
  • Low mood, anxiety or distress about your skin

Conventional treatment options

Dermatologists treat acne according to its severity:

  • Topical treatment: retinoid creams, benzoyl peroxide or antibiotic gels for mild to moderate acne
  • Oral antibiotics for a limited period in inflammatory acne
  • Hormonal treatment for some women, such as certain contraceptive pills or anti-androgen medicines
  • Oral isotretinoin for severe or scarring acne, under close medical supervision
  • Procedures such as peels, light therapy, laser and treatment of scars

Homeopathic medicines commonly considered for acne

These medicines are commonly considered in homeopathy for acne, with the symptom picture traditionally associated with each. They are listed for general information, not as a prescription.

Sulphur: red, itchy, burning pimples on oily, unclean-looking skin, worse from warmth and washing.

Pulsatilla: pimples around puberty and periods, in mild and weepy girls who dislike rich food.

Natrum muriaticum: oily skin with pimples on the forehead, in reserved people who crave salt.

Hepar sulphuris: painful, pus-filled pimples that are very sensitive to touch.

Kali bromatum: acne on the face, shoulders and back that leaves scars, in adolescents.

The right medicine is chosen only after detailed case-taking by an experienced doctor.

Self-care and lifestyle tips

These measures support general health and may ease symptoms, but they do not replace treatment when it is needed.

  • Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser, and do not scrub hard.
  • Do not squeeze or pick pimples, which causes scars and dark marks.
  • Choose oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturisers and make-up, and remove make-up at night.
  • Keep hair clean and away from the face, and wash pillow covers often.
  • Drink plenty of water, eat zinc-rich food such as nuts, seeds and pulses, and cut back on sugar and fried food.
  • Have a bath after heavy workouts, use sunscreen, and manage stress and sleep.

Frequently asked questions about acne

1. What is the homeopathic treatment for acne?

Homeopathic treatment is individualised: the medicine is chosen after detailed case-taking, based on the type of pimples, your hormonal pattern and general health. Sulphur, Pulsatilla, Natrum muriaticum and Hepar sulphuris are among those traditionally considered. It is offered as supportive care, alongside skin care.

2. What causes acne in adults?

Hormonal changes, polycystic ovary syndrome, stress, some medicines and cosmetics are common causes, and women often get flares around their periods.

3. Does diet cause acne?

Diet is not the main cause, but sugary and refined foods and, in some people, dairy may aggravate it. A balanced diet with plenty of water is advisable.

4. How can I prevent acne scars?

Treat acne early, never squeeze pimples, protect your skin from the sun and see a doctor for deep acne before scars form.

5. Can I consult Welling Homeopathy online for acne?

Yes. You can share photographs and your history and consult our specialists online from anywhere. We have been consulting patients online for 25 years.

6. Which is the best homeopathic medicine for acne?

There is no single best homeopathic medicine for acne. Sulphur, Pulsatilla, Natrum muriaticum, Hepar sulphuris and Kali bromatum are among the medicines traditionally considered, but the right medicine depends on your symptoms, what brings them on or eases them, your general health and your personality. At Welling Homeopathy our specialists choose it after a detailed case-taking, so please consult them rather than choosing a medicine yourself.

7. How long does homeopathic treatment for acne take?

The duration depends on how long you have had acne, how severe it is, what treatment you have already taken and your general health. Some people notice a change in their symptoms within weeks, while others need several months of regular follow-up. Your specialist will explain what to expect at your first consultation and review your progress at each follow-up.

8. Is it safe to take homeopathic medicines along with my current medicines for acne?

Homeopathic medicines are highly diluted and are not known to interfere with other medicines, but you should always tell your doctor and our specialists about everything you take. Please do not stop, skip or change any prescribed medicine on your own; any change should be discussed with the doctor who prescribed it.

9. What are the early signs of acne?

Blackheads and whiteheads on the forehead, nose and chin, increasing oiliness of the skin, and small red pimples, often at puberty or before periods, are the usual early signs of acne.

10. What should I eat or avoid if I have acne?

Drink plenty of water, include zinc-rich food such as nuts, seeds and pulses, and cut back on sugary drinks, sweets and fried food. In some people dairy aggravates acne, so notice your own pattern.

11. What is the difference between conventional and homeopathic treatment of acne?

Conventional treatment of acne uses retinoid or benzoyl peroxide creams, antibiotics, hormonal treatment for some women and isotretinoin for severe acne. Homeopathic treatment, in contrast, is individualised: the medicine is chosen for you as a whole person, after detailed case-taking, and is offered alongside the conventional care that your doctor advises.

12. Who is the best homeopathy doctor for acne in Mumbai?

Dr. Sourabh Welling, M.D., founder of Welling Homeopathy, Mumbai, who has over 25 years of experience, treats acne with individualised homeopathic care, together with a team of senior specialists. You can consult him and the team at our Mumbai clinics or online.
