Back pain: A slipped disc can affect the sciatic nerve
Pain in the lower back – also known as lumbago – is particularly common, although it can be felt anywhere along the spine – from the neck down to the hips.
In most cases the pain isn’t caused by anything serious and will usually get better over time – it could be caused by a pulled muscle or as a result of having slept in a more unusual position.
Most back pain does not have an obvious causes or originate from joints, bones or soft tissue around the spine.
This tends to get better or worse depending on position – can develop suddenly or gradually and can be as a result of poor posture or lifting something awkwardly.
However it may be due to a minor injury such as sprain caused by a strained ligament or strain, pulled muscle.
Back pain: Breast, neck and muscle problems are very common
There are five key medical conditions which can cause back pain.
These include:
A slipped disc
A slipped disc of cartilage in the spine pressing on a nerve can cause back pain and numbness, tingling and weakness in other parts of the body.
The sciatic nerve is often affected in cases of slipped disc.
Sciatica
Sciatica is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve – the longest nerve in the body which runs from the back of the pelvis through the buttocks and down each leg to the feet.(
This can cause pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the lower back, buttocks, legs and feet.
It usually happens when one of the shock-absorbing discs that sits between the bones of the spine bulges – or ‘slips’ – and then presses on the nerve.
Ankylosing spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic condition in which the spine and other areas of the body become inflamed – or swollen.
The condition causes pain and stiffness that’s usually worse in the morning and improves with movement,
Spondylolisthesis
Spondylolisthesis is where a bone in the spine (vertebra) slips out of position, either forwards or backwards.
It’s most common in the lower back (lumbar spine), but it can also occur in the mid to upper back (thoracic spine) or the neck (cervical spine).
Back pain: Sciatica is caused by an irritation of the sciatic nerve
The condition can cause lower back pain and stiffness, as well as numbness and tingling.
Very rarely, back pain can be a sign of a serious problem such as a broken bone in the spine, an infection, cauda equina syndrome (where the nerves in the lower back become severely compressed) or cancer.
Back, neck and muscle problems led to a staggering 31 million days of work being lost last year, according to one study.
The condition is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and is commonly managed temporarily by prescribing medicines such as anti-inflammatories.

Frequently asked questions about back pain
1. Which diseases can cause back pain?
Common causes are muscle strain, disc problems, spondylosis and arthritis, sciatica and nerve compression. Less commonly, back pain can come from kidney stones or infection, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoporotic fractures, gynaecological conditions or, rarely, tumours. This is why persistent back pain deserves a proper diagnosis.
2. When is back pain a sign of something serious?
Warning signs include fever, unexplained weight loss, severe night pain, back pain after a fall in an older person, numbness or weakness in the legs, and loss of bladder or bowel control. Get medical attention promptly if any of these are present.
3. Can kidney problems cause back pain?
Yes. Kidney stones and infections cause pain in the flank or lower back, often with burning urine, fever or pain that comes in waves and spreads to the groin. This needs a medical assessment.
4. Which tests are used to find the cause of back pain?
Your doctor may advise X-ray, MRI or CT scan, blood tests for inflammation and vitamin D, and urine tests, depending on your symptoms and examination.
5. Can homeopathy help with back pain?
Homeopathy is offered as individualised, supportive care to help manage pain once the cause is known. Please get the cause diagnosed first, and continue any treatment your doctor advises.
