Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is pain on the outer side of the elbow caused by overuse of the forearm muscles that extend the wrist. Despite the name, most people who get it do not play tennis; it also affects people who use computers, carry heavy bags, paint or use tools.
Symptoms
- Pain or burning on the outside of the elbow that may spread down the forearm
- Weak grip, and pain when lifting a cup, shaking hands or turning a door handle
- Tenderness over the bony point of the outer elbow
Causes
Repetitive gripping and wrist movements, poor technique, a sudden increase in activity and, sometimes, age-related changes in the tendon lead to tiny tears and inflammation where the tendon attaches to the bone.
Self-care and treatment
- Rest the arm from the activity that causes pain, and apply ice for short periods
- Use a forearm strap or brace and adjust your technique or equipment
- Gradual stretching and strengthening exercises with a physiotherapist
- Injections or other procedures are considered only when simple measures fail
Most cases settle over weeks to months. Homeopathic treatment is individualised and can be used for pain and recovery along with these measures. Pain that follows an injury, or is accompanied by swelling and fever, should be checked by a doctor.
