A panic attack is a sudden surge of intense fear or discomfort that peaks within minutes. Older terms such as anxiety or restlessness now often fall under this diagnosis, and more people seek help for it than before.
What does it feel like?
- Pounding heart, chest tightness or pain
- Shortness of breath, choking sensation, dizziness or faintness
- Sweating, trembling, tingling or numbness, nausea
- Fear of losing control, of going mad or of dying
Because the symptoms resemble a heart attack, a first episode should be checked by a doctor to rule out heart, thyroid or other medical causes.
During an attack
- Remind yourself that it will pass, usually within 10–20 minutes
- Breathe slowly: in through the nose for four, out through the mouth for six
- Sit down, ground yourself by noticing things you can see and touch
Longer-term help
Cognitive behavioural therapy is effective. Reducing caffeine and alcohol, regular exercise and sleep help too, and medicines are used in some people. Homeopathic treatment looks at the person’s temperament and triggers and can be offered as supportive care alongside this.
