Everyday obstacles and deadlines create stress and anxiety for most of us. The good news is that a few simple habits can lower tension within minutes and, practised regularly, build resilience over time.
Seven ways to de-stress
- Breathe slowly. Inhale for four counts, hold briefly, exhale for six. Slow breathing calms the nervous system within a couple of minutes.
- Move. A brisk 15-minute walk, stretching or yoga releases muscle tension and improves mood.
- Break the routine. Step outside, change your surroundings or try something new for a short while.
- Talk to someone. Sharing a worry with a friend or family member often shrinks it.
- Limit caffeine and sugar when you feel wound up, and drink water instead.
- Protect your sleep. Keep regular hours and switch off screens an hour before bed.
- Take short breaks from work and news, and make time for something you enjoy.
When stress needs more help
