Don't Overlook These Early Symptoms of Bladder Cancer

Warning Signs That Could Be Bladder Cancer

Homeopathic supportive care consultation at Welling Homeopathy, Mumbai

Bladder cancer often announces itself with blood in the urine, which is why knowing the early symptoms of bladder cancer matters. Like lung cancer, bladder cancer is strongly linked to smoking, thought to cause about half of cases. Age is another major risk factor: most cases happen after age 55 and the average age at diagnosis is about 73. This page explains the warning signs of bladder cancer, which symptoms are more likely to be an infection or stones, the risk factors, how it is diagnosed and treated, and how supportive homeopathic care is offered alongside oncology treatment.

Bladder cancer warning signs at a glance

  • Most common sign: blood in the urine (haematuria), often painless and on and off.
  • Other signs: pain or burning when passing urine, frequent urges even when you do not need to go, a weak stream, and pelvic or back pain.
  • Biggest risk factor: smoking; also workplace chemicals, age over 55, male sex and chronic bladder infections.
  • Do not assume infection: visible blood in the urine needs a check even if it stops.
  • Diagnosis: urine tests, cystoscopy and imaging; treatment is by a urologist and oncologist.

Early warning signs of bladder cancer

  • Blood in the urine, which may look pink, red, orange or cola-coloured, or be seen only on a urine test
  • Pain or burning when passing urine
  • Frequent urges to urinate, even when the bladder is not full
  • Urgency, or difficulty passing urine, or a weak stream
  • Pelvic or lower back pain
  • Swelling in the feet, bone pain or weight loss with advanced disease

Bladder cancer can be a scary diagnosis, but knowing the red flags may help it be found early, when treatment is more effective.

Symptoms of bladder cancer or something else?

Symptom Common benign cause Why it still needs checking
Blood in urine Urinary infection, kidney or bladder stones, enlarged prostate Painless bleeding that comes and goes can be the only early sign of bladder cancer
Burning on urination, frequency Urinary tract infection If it does not clear with treatment or recurs, tests are needed
Weak stream, difficulty emptying Prostate enlargement May also occur with tumours in the bladder neck
Pelvic or back pain Muscular strain, stones Persistent pain with other signs needs scans

Risk factors

  • Smoking, which causes about half of bladder cancers
  • Age over 55
  • Male sex: men are affected about three to four times more often
  • Workplace chemicals such as aromatic amines in dyes, rubber, leather, paint and metal industries
  • Chronic bladder irritation: long-term catheters, recurrent infections, bladder stones and, in some countries, schistosomiasis
  • Previous radiation to the pelvis or the chemotherapy drug cyclophosphamide
  • Family history of bladder cancer

How bladder cancer is diagnosed

  • Urine tests for blood and cancer cells (cytology)
  • Cystoscopy: a thin camera passed into the bladder to look at the lining
  • Transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT), to remove the tumour and examine it
  • CT urogram, MRI or ultrasound, to see the kidneys, ureters and the spread of the disease
  • Blood tests, and further scans to look for spread

Treatment options

Treatment depends on whether the cancer is confined to the bladder lining or has invaded the muscle:

  • Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (most cases at diagnosis): TURBT followed by bladder instillations of BCG or chemotherapy, and regular cystoscopy checks, because it often returns
  • Muscle-invasive bladder cancer: chemotherapy before surgery, radical cystectomy (removal of the bladder) or radiotherapy with chemotherapy
  • Advanced disease: chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy
  • Stopping smoking, which improves the outlook

Supportive homeopathic care

If you are diagnosed with bladder cancer, talk to our specialist for our homeopathic treatment for bladder cancer. At Welling Homeopathy it is offered as supportive care alongside your urologist and oncologist, never in place of cystoscopy, surgery, instillations or chemotherapy. Read our pages on homeopathy specialist for cancer and the 4-step supportive protocol.

What you can do

  • See a doctor promptly if you notice blood in your urine, even once
  • Stop smoking, and reduce exposure to industrial chemicals at work
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Do not take repeated antibiotics for urinary symptoms without a urine test and examination
  • Keep follow-up cystoscopy appointments if you have had bladder cancer

Frequently asked questions about bladder cancer symptoms

1. What are the early symptoms of bladder cancer?

Blood in the urine is the most common, along with burning or pain on passing urine, frequent urges and pelvic or back pain.

2. Is blood in the urine always cancer?

No. Infection, stones and prostate problems are more common causes, but blood in the urine always needs a check, because it can be the only early sign of bladder cancer.

3. What causes bladder cancer?

Smoking is the biggest cause, followed by workplace chemicals, chronic bladder irritation, age and male sex.

4. How is bladder cancer diagnosed?

Through urine tests, cystoscopy, removal and examination of the tumour (TURBT) and scans.

5. Can bladder cancer be cured if found early?

Early, non-invasive bladder cancer is often treated successfully, but it commonly returns and needs long-term follow-up with cystoscopy.

6. Does bladder cancer cause pain?

Often not in the early stages. Pain on urination or pelvic or back pain may appear as it grows.

7. Can homeopathy help in bladder cancer?

Welling Homeopathy offers supportive care alongside oncology treatment, not instead of it.

8. Which doctor should I see for blood in the urine?

A urologist, who will examine you and may arrange a cystoscopy.
