Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin condition in which skin cells grow in days instead of the normal four weeks or so, building up as thick, red, scaly patches. Home measures cannot cure it, but several can ease dryness, itching and scaling, particularly in mild disease.
Home measures that may help
- Moisturise often. Thick, fragrance-free creams or ointments applied after a bath lock in moisture and reduce scaling and itching.
- Take short, lukewarm baths. Adding colloidal oatmeal or Epsom salts can soften scales; avoid hot water and harsh soaps.
- Aloe vera gel. Some studies suggest creams containing aloe may reduce redness and scaling in mild psoriasis.
- Plain coconut or olive oil can help soften scales, especially on the scalp, before gentle removal.
- Brief, safe sun exposure. Small amounts of sunlight can improve plaques, but sunburn makes psoriasis worse.
- Healthy habits. Keeping a healthy weight, avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol can reduce flare-ups, and stress management helps many people.
Cautions
Evidence for many popular remedies is limited. Avoid scratching or picking scales, which can trigger new patches, and be careful with unproven oils or herbal applications that can irritate the skin. See a doctor if psoriasis is widespread, painful, affects the joints or nails, or does not improve. Homeopathic treatment is individualised and can be used alongside these measures.
