Psoriatic arthritis is a form of inflammatory arthritis that affects some people who have psoriasis – up to roughly three in ten. Joint pain, stiffness and swelling are the main symptoms. Most people develop psoriasis first, but joint problems can begin before the skin changes.
Symptoms
- Pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints, often worse in the morning
- Swollen fingers or toes (“sausage digits”)
- Heel pain or pain where tendons attach to bone
- Lower back and neck stiffness
- Nail changes such as pitting, and tiredness
Can it be cured completely?
At present there is no established cure for psoriatic arthritis, but it can usually be controlled. The aim of treatment is to reduce pain and inflammation, protect the joints from permanent damage and maintain function. Starting treatment early gives the best outcome, so persistent joint symptoms in someone with psoriasis should be checked by a rheumatologist.
Treatment
Options include anti-inflammatory painkillers, disease-modifying drugs and biological medicines, along with physiotherapy, exercise, weight control and skin treatment.
Homeopathic care
Homeopathic treatment is individualised and can be used as supportive care to help with symptoms and overall wellbeing. It should not replace medicines your rheumatologist considers necessary to protect your joints.
