Kidney cancer is cancer that starts in the kidney. The most common type is renal cell carcinoma, which accounts for about nine in ten cases. Another type, urothelial carcinoma, starts in the lining of the kidney’s collecting system (the renal pelvis) and behaves more like bladder cancer.
Risk factors
Smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, long-term kidney failure or dialysis, certain inherited conditions and some workplace chemical exposures raise the risk. Kidney cancer is most often diagnosed in adults over about 50.
Symptoms
- Blood in the urine
- A lump or persistent pain in the side or back
- Unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue or fever
Many kidney cancers are found by chance during an ultrasound or CT scan done for another reason.
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis uses imaging (ultrasound, CT or MRI) and sometimes a biopsy. Surgery to remove the tumour or the kidney is the main treatment for localised disease; targeted therapy and immunotherapy are used when the cancer has spread. The plan is made by a urologist and an oncologist.
Supportive homeopathic care
Homeopathic treatment may be used as supportive care alongside conventional treatment to help with general health and recovery. It should not replace the care your cancer team advises.
