There are many types of headache – over a hundred recognised categories – but most fall into a few common groups. Knowing which type you have is the first step towards treating it properly.
Common types
- Tension-type headache: a dull, tight band-like pressure on both sides of the head, linked with stress, poor posture and lack of sleep
- Migraine: throbbing pain, usually on one side, with nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, sometimes preceded by visual disturbances (aura)
- Cluster headache: severe stabbing pain around one eye with a watering eye and runny nose, occurring in clusters over weeks
- Medication-overuse headache: daily headache caused by frequent use of painkillers
- Sinus and cervical headaches: linked to sinus infection or neck problems
Common triggers
Stress, skipped meals, dehydration, lack or excess of sleep, bright light, strong smells, certain foods, alcohol, hormonal changes and long screen hours.
Seek urgent medical help for
- A sudden, severe “worst-ever” headache
- Headache with fever and stiff neck, confusion, weakness, vision loss or difficulty speaking
- Headache after a head injury, or a new headache after the age of 50
- A headache that keeps getting worse over days or weeks
Management
Keep a headache diary, sleep and eat regularly, stay hydrated, exercise and limit painkillers to a few days a month. Homeopathic treatment is individualised to the type and triggers and can be used as part of the plan.
