Blood cancers – mainly leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma – affect the bone marrow, blood and lymph glands. They occur in both children and adults, and many people in Mumbai travel to the city’s hospitals for treatment that can last months or even years. Because the treatment is intensive and the blood counts keep changing, families look for every possible form of safe supportive care.
This page explains what treatment usually involves, the side effects people commonly face, and how complementary homeopathic cancer care at Welling Homeopathy can sit alongside – never in place of – the plan made by your oncology team.
How blood cancer is usually treated
Treatment depends on the exact type (for example acute or chronic leukemia, Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma, or myeloma), its stage and your general health. Your haematologist or oncologist may recommend:
- Chemotherapy – combinations of drugs given in cycles, often through a vein or central line, sometimes with drugs into the spinal fluid.
- Targeted therapy – tablets or infusions such as imatinib for chronic myeloid leukemia, or rituximab for many lymphomas.
- Immunotherapy and newer treatments – monoclonal antibodies and, in selected cases, CAR-T cell therapy.
- Radiation therapy – for some lymphomas, or before a stem cell transplant.
- Stem cell (bone marrow) transplant – for selected patients, using their own cells or those of a donor.
- Supportive care – blood and platelet transfusions, antibiotics, growth factors and nutritional support during treatment.
Common side effects of treatment
Side effects differ from person to person and depend on the drugs, doses and your general health. Your oncology team can often prevent or reduce many of them with medicines and supportive measures, so always report symptoms early.
Chemotherapy (common effects in blood cancer treatment)
- Low blood counts: tiredness and breathlessness from anaemia, bruising or bleeding from low platelets, and infections from low white cells
- Fever with low white cell count (neutropenic fever), which is an emergency
- Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and weight loss
- Mouth sores and difficulty eating
- Hair loss
- Constipation or diarrhoea
- Bone pain, numbness and tingling in hands and feet
- Anxiety, poor sleep and “chemo brain”
Radiation therapy
- Skin redness and soreness in the treated area
- Tiredness that builds up during treatment
- Dry mouth or sore throat when the head and neck are treated
- Nausea if the abdomen is treated
- Low blood counts when large areas of marrow are in the field
Stem cell transplant and targeted therapy
- Severe tiredness, mouth sores and long recovery of counts after a transplant
- Graft-versus-host disease (skin, gut and liver problems) after donor transplants – managed by the transplant team
- Fluid retention, muscle cramps, rashes and diarrhoea with some targeted drugs
- Infection risk that continues for months
How complementary homeopathic care fits in
Complementary care means supportive treatment given together with your oncology treatment. At Welling Homeopathy the aim is to help you feel as well as possible during and after treatment: easing symptoms and side effects where we can, supporting appetite, energy and sleep, and helping you keep up your quality of life so that you can carry on with the treatment your doctors have planned.
What does the research say? Research on homeopathy for the side effects of cancer treatment is limited. A few small studies of particular remedies (for example for radiation skin reactions or mouth sores) have been reported, but good-quality evidence is lacking, and homeopathy has not been shown to treat or cure cancer. For this reason we use homeopathic care only as a complement, and never as a replacement for surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, targeted, hormonal or immune therapy, or for the advice of your oncologist.
ImmunoKnife™ Homeopathy Treatment Process
ImmunoKnife™ is the speciality homeopathic treatment process for cancers developed by Dr. Sourabh Welling at Welling Research Labs in Mumbai and practised at the Welling cancer clinics. Our approach looks at the whole person – the disease, the treatment you are having, your symptoms and your constitution – and is aimed at easing treatment-related problems such as weakness, nausea, mouth sores, poor appetite and sleep disturbance, and at supporting overall quality of life through long treatment. It is offered as supportive care around your oncology treatment, and your oncologist should always be told about it.
Over 25 years of experience treating patients
Dr. Sourabh Welling, founder of Welling Homeopathy, has been treating patients for more than 25 years, including people living with cancer and going through chemotherapy and radiation. In a first consultation he and his team take a detailed history – your diagnosis and treatment plan, your symptoms, your past health and your personality – so that supportive care is planned around you and not around a standard list.
Practical ways to feel better during treatment
- Prevent infection – wash hands often, keep the mouth clean, eat only freshly cooked food, avoid raw salads, unpeeled fruit and street food, and stay away from anyone with a cold or fever when your counts are low.
- Check your temperature – keep a thermometer at home and report any fever at once; do not take paracetamol first to “wait and see”.
- Keep up fluids and protein – small, frequent meals with dal, eggs, curd and soft cooked vegetables help strength and healing.
- Gentle activity – short walks and rests protect muscles and mood, but avoid contact activities and falls when platelets are low.
- Soft toothbrush and electric shaver – to reduce bleeding and mouth injury.
- Rest and sleep – plan the day around your energy; accept help from family.
- Mental health – long treatment is tiring for patients and families; counselling and support groups help.
When to call your oncologist or go to hospital urgently
Do not wait for a homeopathic appointment if you have any of the following – contact your oncology team or go to the nearest hospital:
- Fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or above, or shaking chills
- Bleeding that does not stop, black stools, or blood in urine or vomit
- Sudden severe headache, confusion, fits or weakness of one side
- Breathlessness, chest pain, or a very fast heartbeat
- Persistent vomiting or being unable to drink
- Severe pain, new swelling of a leg, or yellowing of the eyes or skin

Frequently asked questions
Can homeopathy cure leukemia or lymphoma?
No. Homeopathy has not been shown to cure or treat leukemia, lymphoma or any other cancer and we do not claim that it does. These cancers need prompt treatment by a haematologist or oncologist. We offer homeopathy only as supportive, complementary care alongside that treatment.
What are the early symptoms of blood cancer?
Persistent tiredness, pale skin, frequent infections or fevers, easy bruising or bleeding, painless swollen glands in the neck, armpit or groin, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, bone or joint pain, and a swollen abdomen. These have many other causes, so a blood test (CBC) and a doctor’s review are the first steps.
Is it safe to take homeopathic medicines during chemotherapy for blood cancer?
Homeopathic medicines are highly diluted and are not known to interfere with chemotherapy or targeted therapy, but when blood counts are low you should tell your oncologist about everything you take, and never delay or stop prescribed treatment.
Can complementary care help children with blood cancer?
Children with leukemia need treatment at a paediatric oncology centre without delay. We can offer gentle, supportive care for side effects such as poor appetite, weakness and sleep problems, always in coordination with the treating team.
How long does treatment for blood cancer usually last?
It varies widely. Acute leukemia treatment commonly runs for many months to two years, lymphoma for several months, and chronic leukemia or myeloma can need long-term treatment with regular monitoring. Your haematologist will give you a plan.
How do I book a consultation in Mumbai?
